Turkey’s military plan in the event of a war with Greece
Retired general in the Turkish army, Erdogan Karakosh, revealed his country’s operations plan in the event of a war with Greece.
Karakoush said during a political debate on “CNN Turk” that the Turkish army will consider the city of Thessaloniki as a primary target in the event of a ground operation against Greece.
The Turkish military recalled that Greece, as an ally of the United States, allowed the establishment of 20 US military bases on its territory, including one in the city of Alexandroupolis, and pointed out that this stronghold is fully equipped and capable of obstructing any ground operation of the Turkish army.
The retired general, however, considered that Greece would seek above all in the event of a war to establish control over Istanbul.
And between Turkey and Greece, two NATO allies, there are sharp differences over the issue of their two continental shelves in the Mediterranean, energy resources in the region, the issue of the divided island of Cyprus into Greek and Turkish, and the status of some islands in the Aegean Sea.
Tensions escalated between the two parties with their intensification of military maneuvers and mutual threats in 2020, which made the two countries on the verge of entering into an armed conflict, and this prompted NATO to hold talks last year that led to the formation of a disengagement mechanism between the Turkish and Greek forces, with several measures taken between the authorities of the two countries to calm tension.
