Turkey investigates Dutch politician Wilders over Erdogan comments
Turkish prosecutors on Tuesday opened an investigation into what Dutch far-right leader Geert Wilders said about President Tayyip Erdogan, Turkish media reported.
Wilders called Erdogan a terrorist Twitter Monday and urged Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte to expel the Turkish ambassador to the Netherlands. He also called for Turkey’s expulsion from NATO.
Ankara prosecutors have opened an investigation into Wilders for publications on Twitter including photographs and insults written against Erdogan, the state-owned company Anadolu news the agency said, citing the prosecutor’s office.
Wilders, leader of the Freedom Party in the Netherlands, is one of Europe’s most prominent far-right politicians and has played a key role in shaping the immigration debate in his country, although ‘he’s never been in government.
His comments prompted a reaction from Turkish officials.
