Morocco’s Council of Ulemas Asks Preachers to Avoid Talking About France

Morocco’s Supreme Council of Ulemas — the highest religious authority in the country — has implicitly asked Moroccan preachers to avoid mentioning the rising Islamophobia in France.

In a note shared earlier this week, the council asked all Moroccan preachers to “stay away from political battles” and “avoid using inappropriate language against people, institutions, or countries.”

The directives came as thousands of Muslims around the world are expressing their anger towards the series of Islamophobic acts that took place in France in recent weeks.

Morocco’s Supreme Council of Ulemas — the highest religious authority in the country — has condemned all attacks on Islam and Prophet Muhammad.

The council issued a statement on Monday, October 26, in response to the rise of Islamophobia in France.

“The council rejects and denounces any form of attack on the sacredness of religions, and at their head the prophets who have transmitted to all humanity the values of love, fraternity, and solidarity between people,” the statement said.

The organization, chaired by King Mohammed VI, said that the world today must “find inspiration in the values transmitted by all prophets to all of humanity, without any distinction.”

The council agreed that all “wise politicians and scientists” must stand against terrorism and “barbaric” crimes. However, it condemned the attacks on Islam and prophets in the name of democracy and freedom of expression.


“Any attack on one of the prophets is an offense against all of them together and a denial of their values, which stand up against all forms of violence, depravity, and moral degradation,” the council said.

The religious authority also warned against the “great dangers” that can result from attacking believers’ faith.

“The slogans of democracy and freedom of expression should not serve as pretexts for hate speech,” the statement said.

The council’s statement came in response to a rise in Islamophobic acts in France.

Last week, French President Emmanuel Macron declared that his country “will not renounce” caricatures and drawings that depict Prophet Muhammad.

A number of French government buildings also allowed the display of caricatures on their facades, deeply offensive to Muslims and the Islamic doctrine.

The provocative move, anti-Islamic speech from France’s president, and a wave of violent episodes prompted a campaign to boycott French products in the Muslim world.

Morocco is among many Islamic countries that officially denounced the Islamophobic acts in France.

Rabat – Morocco’s House of Councillors, or upper house, condemned on Tuesday Islamophobia and insults against the Prophet Muhammad in France.

During a parliamentary session on Tuesday, the components of the House of Councillors welcomed the statement Morocco’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the High Council of Scholars released in response to the attacks on Islam.

The Justice and Development Party (PJD) group in the House of Councillors said it strongly denounces Charlie Hebdo’s cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad and the persistence in republishing them.

The group argued that the cartoons constitute an “unacceptable and inappropriate” offense to the feelings of two billion Muslims across the world.

The group of the Al Istiqlal (Independence) Party called the cartoon campaign “unreasonable behavior,” recalling Morocco’s official statement which stressed that freedom of expression ends where that of others begins.

Several other parties within the House of Councillors also condemned the offense to Islam, including the National Rally of Independents (RNI), who stressed that “freedom” has some degree of “rules and principles.”

The statement from the House of Councillors marked the eve of Eid Al Mawlid Annabawi, the anniversary of the birth of the Prophet Muhammad.

Billions of Muslims are celebrating the anniversary today, October 29.

Muslims across the world expressed anger at the offensive Charlie Hebdo cartoons France is using to define its principles of freedom of expression.

French President Emmanuel Macron said that France will never give up its cartoons and claimed Islamists want France’s future.

The statement came in response to the murder of history teacher Samuel Paty. An 18-year-old student beheaded Paty for displaying Charlie Hebdo’s offensive cartoons of the prophet during a class on freedom of expression.

Tension continues to rise in France following today’s knife attack at a church in Nice.

The Mayor of Nice, Christian Estrosi, said the city is “once again touched in her heart by the Islamofascism that I keep denouncing.” In July 2016, Nice was the site of one of France’s worst terrorist attacks, when a 31-year-old man drove a truck into crowds of people, killing 86 and injuring 434.

"What is happening in France is persecution of a religious minority. France can't justify such persecution under the pretext of expressions of freedom and secularism," said Mohammed Jabron, an Islamic history professor.

He added that "the French state is responsible for protecting its people from abuses and offenses to their sanctities."

A number of Moroccan parties also slammed the French campaign against Islam.

The Unity and Reform Movement rejected French attempts to abuse Islam and its symbols.

The country’s second-largest opposition party, the Istiqlal (Independence) Party, also expressed "deep resentment over the insulting cartoons against Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, and the remarks against Islam."

The party called for dialogue to address cases connected to Islamophobia and extremism and to find a formula for coexistence.

In recent weeks, Macron has attacked Islam and the Muslim community, accusing Muslims of "separatism." He described Islam as “a religion in crisis all over the world."

His remarks coincided with a provocative move by Charlie Hebdo, a left-wing French satirical magazine infamous for publishing anti-Islamic caricatures which have triggered widespread anger and outrage across the Muslim world.

Earlier this year, it republished cartoons insulting Islam and Prophet Muhammad.

The caricatures were first published in 2006 by the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten, sparking a wave of protests.
