    Thoughts of A Marginal Woman

    The Rent Women Pay

    The day before yesterday
    When I was born
Full of light and dreams to wander
I passed through time and space
    I am unaware

    Yesterday when I grew up
You said my light burned too bright
'Darling, such light belongs only to some'
    You pass me by
    I am aware

    Today when I am grown
    Polished under pressure
    You stop and stare
I am worthy of the light
But that light has been quenched
    I am empty

Tomorrow when the rent is due
Will I pay in coal or diamonds
While I wander around in the dark
    Searching for a way back
    To that day before yesterday
    I am paying the price

    Tradition

    We teach girls control
Don't run around, don't climb that tree
    Girls won't be girls

    We teach girls silence
Don't think out loud, don't speak up
Your mind is not your worth

    We teach girls shame
    Close your legs, cover yourself
    Your female body is criminal

    We teach girls guilt
    Don't desire, don't lust after
    Your passion is a sin

    We teach girls self-blame
    Love your body, express yourself
But beware, you may be violated

    Once she becomes a woman
She sees her worth is measured
    By her obedience to society
And her body is not hers alone

    Home

    It's you
From the moment your eyes met mine
A void inside me became known
    Instantly filled with with recognition
    'Him, it's him'

    You knew it too
Your arms hugged my body slowly
Your touch leaned close to my soul
    And suddenly,
    Feeling at home made sense

    I promised you
    That I would open up
That my head would follow my heart
    But it wasn't quick enough
    Not for you

    Since you left
    I have been walking around
    Looking for our home
    But it's dark outside
And there's no light to guide me

    It's still you
Because no one else makes sense
    No one feels like home
But you loved me too early
And I loved you too late

    Hypatia

    Have you ever wondered
    about your female ancestors
and how many have endured pain
    because of tradition
    because of beliefs
    suffered silently for ages
    screaming inside their head
    deprived of education
    and autonomy of their life

    I have wondered
about how traces of that pain
can still be found in our DNA
    how we are a product
of the ones who stayed silent
    and the ones who burned
    then I wonder
    about the ones suffering today
    enduring in silence

    How scary it is

    to see men worship her
    when she is divine,
she who is mother of all creation,

and to see men crush her
    when she is human,
she who is less than her creation.

    Kindness
    how we admire it
    so rare, almost godlike.
    How insightful to realize that
the expectation of a divine reward
may be the only thing fuelling that
    kindness.

    Lilith

    Witches

    they are the embodiment
    of female figures who hunger
    for empowerment in a culture
    that won't allow them:

    the healer,
    the fighter,
    the disobedient wife,
the girl who decided to write,
the queen who ruled in her own right,
the woman who dared to march for rights,
the woman who decided to live on her own,
the woman who refused to leverage her sexuality,
and the sluts and whores who would.

    Witches, those witches

    I prefer
    the world
    in my room
    where the dark
    colors of reality
    cannot paint over
    my sensitive colors.

    Pink Chains

    I was not born
    into a family
into as long as it’s healthy

    I was born
    into a color
    wrapped in pink

    I grew up
    being envious of
    different shades

    Of colors that
    do not match
    with pretty pink

So many people walk this earth,
    With purpose in their eyes,
    To roam and wander
    From dusk till dawn,
    Always moving,
    And out of breath.

    So many people crave immortality,
    A chance at eternal beauty,
But in their heart they know,
What they desire is a lie,
    And so they frame,
    What is and should be.

So many people run day and night,
The alarm goes off at 6am,
    Like every other day,
    Thinking they are close,
    Closer to abundance,
But it never seems close enough.

So many people and I am but one,
All too scared that one day soon,
I will walk with the crowd,
Always waiting for the day to come,
When I can say I have lived,
    And achieved it all.

    I have walked this earth,
    With purpose in my eyes,
    I roamed and wandered
    From dusk till dawn,
    Now I am still,
    And breathing.

    Sensitive.
    I am sensitive.
You may see that as a weakness,
But I will feel powerful anyway.

    Fear.
    I channel your fear.
You may want to conceal it,
But I will channel it anyway.

    Silence.
    I hear your thoughts.
You may not utter a single word,
But I will hear you anyway.

    Pain.
    I feel your pain.
You may show me your strength,
But I will feel it anyway.

    Truth.
    I know your truth.
You may think you can hide it.
But I will know it anyway.

    Love.
    I carry your love.
You may say I can’t relate,
But I will understand it anyway.

    Sensitive.
    I am sensitive.
You may see that as a weakness,
But I will feel powerful anyway.
