The article then notes that “on the other hand, the only Israeli defense system that has been active in recent years is the Iron Dome system, and other defense systems of the regime army, except for a few cases, have not yet entered into a serious conflict, and therefore the correctness of their operation is questionable.” What does Iran think Hamas should be doing. Tasnim says that the Iron Dome system also has several weaknesses. “First, the number of available systems is not able to cover all the occupied territories, and therefore in the event of a multi-front war, this system will not be able to respond to rocket and missile attacks, and the air defense of the Israeli low altitude will be extremely vulnerable.” In addition the report says that “on the other hand, one of the weaknesses of this system is its inability to deal with large volumes of fire; This is an issue that the resistance groups have also realized and this is one of the reasons why these groups fired rockets at high volumes.”
Tasnim says that Hamas, likely with Iranian advice, has increased the speed of their rockets, making them harder to intercept. It has also increased accuracy and volume of fire. “This shows that the resistance groups have gradually increased the quality of their rockets and missiles by carefully studying the strengths and weaknesses of the Zionist Army Air Defense Organization and especially its Iron Dome system, and so far they have been able to balance the acceptable power with the Zionist regime. If this continues, it will lead the resistance groups to acquire much more advanced weapons than today and to inflict heavier blows on the Zionist regime.”
This indicates a clear blueprint for how Hamas conducted this war. Hamas has moved from the 130-rocket barrage specifically targeting Ashkelon to say that it targeted airports and used kamikaze drones, based on an Iranian export design for the Houthis, and that it has other advanced weapons. It also has a new 250km range missile.
Ghaani’s discussion with Haniyeh may indicate that Iran’s hand is even closer to the conflict then yet acknowledged. Iran had predicted this war between May 6 and 8. Hamas launched the war on May 10 on Jerusalem Day. This is clearly a message. Iran had indicated that Israel could be defeated in Quds Day speeches on May 7 and 8. Hamas moved forward on May 10 with the strike aimed at Jerusalem as a symbol of “defending Al-Aqsa.”

Tasnim says that Hamas, likely with Iranian advice, has increased the speed of their rockets, making them harder to intercept. It has also increased accuracy and volume of fire.

Over the past few days, Israel has been attacked with rockets from Palestinian fighters, some which have got past the country’s much publicized ‘Iron Dome’ defensive system designed to block rocket barrages.

Various reports put the number of rockets fired from the Palestinian side as between 500 to 1500 over the course of 3 days. According to Israeli reports, some these rockets hit homes killing 2 persons and others struck an empty bus setting it on fire and injuring three people nearby.

70 rockets in 30 minutes

A report from Al Jazeera’s Nida Ibrahim from the occupied West Bank city of Ramallah, said Hamas’ armed wing fired their “largest barrage” yet from the enclave towards Israel- 70 rockets were fired in 30 minutes.

Palestine’s Dunya Al Watan news portal reported that the Al-Qassam Brigade, the military wing of Hamas movement that controls the Gaza Strip, said it had launched 100 rockets towards the Israeli city of Beersheba early on Wednesday. In addition, a missile strike from Gaza targeted one of Tel Aviv districts early on Wednesday, a TASS correspondent reported from the scene.

90% rockets destroyed

On Tuesday, the Israeli military said that 90 percent of rockets that reached Israeli airspace were destroyed by Iron Dome. Roughly 500 missiles had been fired from Gaza since the start of the conflict, military officials said as quoted in Israeli media.

However, even admitting that 10% of the rockets got past ‘Iron Dome,’ it still is a large number of rockets and missiles. The sheer number of projectiles fired towards Israel may have overwhelmed the Iron Dome system, some reports quoting western analysts said.

However, a report in Washington Post said some defense analysts question those numbers (of blocking 90% of rockets), arguing that the Israeli figures for successful interception are unreliable and that groups including Hamas and Islamic Jihad that fire rockets and artillery from Gaza have adapted to the system.

Iron Dome upgrade

The rocket firing by Hamas comes at a time when the Iron Dome has been upgraded to handle the next level of threats.

In March this year, the Israeli Ministry of Defense (MoD) had announced an upgrade to the Iron Dome system that enhances its ability to address evolving threats such as UAVs, missiles and rocket barrages.

An Israeli official, the head of the Mapat wall administration, Moshe Fattal was quoted as saying in an Israeli MoD release, "10 years after the first operational interception of the Iron Dome system, we are today completing a technological leap in the system's capabilities. In three series of experiments within a few months, we have jumped the capabilities of the Iron Dome system into the next generation of threats: complex, loaded and challenging missile and rocket barrages, clusters of unmanned aerial vehicles and more.”

Israeli Minister of Defense, Bnei Gantz was also quoted in the release: "The Israeli technological superiority provided through the Iron Dome and the multi-layered defense system is a cornerstone of Israel’s defense….thanks to which the citizens of Israel can sleep peacefully."

Middle East Monitor

Langotsky, a former adviser on technological safety to the defence minister, said the Iron Dome will only afford partial and limited protection against Hamas and Lebanon's Hezbollah's rockets in any future war.

He noted that the Iron Dome has several restrictions, including its interception of short-distance rockets because interception takes place above civil areas, as well as its inability to intercept long-range ballistic rockets.

Each Iron Dome rocket costs Israel about $100,000, he said, with two rockets often needed to intercept a Palestinian missile, leaving Tel Aviv forced to store a large number of its defence equipment.
