South Park takes on political correctness in Caitlyn Jenner episode

Series opener satirises PC supporters for their reaction to Bruce Jenner's transformation

South Park, known for its close-to-the-bone take on zeitgeist issues, chose to dedicate its season premiere to Caitlyn Jenner on Wednesday night.

The start of the US animation's 19th series introduced a new character, PC Principal, a new headmaster for South Park school who wants rid of the town's traditionally prejudiced and backward ways - such as calling the only student of colour Token and using the word "retarded".

Jenner, the former Olympic decathlete Bruce Jenner who this year came out as a transgender woman, is a hot topic in the town. However, Kyle does not share the opinion that Jenner is "a hero", and receives two weeks of detention as a result.

Cartman attempts to halt the wave of political correctness by framing PC Principal, but winds up in hospital after the new headmaster beats him up. Eventually, Kyle gives in, claiming that Jenner is indeed a hero, as well as being "absolutely stunning". Characters referred to Jenner as a "he" during the episode.

The 18th series of South Park introduced continuity to the show after 17 series of standalone episodes, so PC Principal, and his politically correct fraternity, will continue to browbeat the town for a few episodes yet.
The episode garnered mixed reviews. Feminist website The Bustle said that 'Stunning and Brave' was "went better than expected, but it still missed the mark in a few places", namely in that Jenner was referred to with male pronouns after she has identified as a woman.

Entertainment Weekly, meanwhile, thought the episode highlighted a turning point for the notoriously "crass and base stereotyping" South Park has become known for over two decades, praising it for taking on PC activists who try to censor the views of others.

"Stunning and Brave isn’t necessarily attacking the general idea of political correctness as a means of giving every human being the respect they deserve, and in fact takes a few moments to admit that South Park’s characters could stand to have more open minds. The episode is moreso critical of the toxic behavior that results when dialogue is cut off."
On Twitter, viewers' were generally very positive about the episode, including US sports commentator Bill Simmons and basketball player Sam Dekker:
