Can you cool yourself down while fasting in Ramadan? -Shaykh ibn al-’Uthaymeen
In the name of Allah the Most Gracious the Most Merciful

Can you cool yourself down while fasting in Ramadan?

By Shaykh Muhammad bin Saalih al-’Uthaymeen may Allah have mercy on him

Question: What is the ruling of cooling oneself down while fasting?

Answer: Cooling oneself down while fasting is permissible and there is no problem with it. While fasting the Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, would pour water over his head due to the heat and his thirst. Also, Ibn ‘Umar would drench his clothing with water while he was fasting due to the severe heat and thirst. And the moisture [from the water] does not affect the fast because the water does not reach the stomach.

Reaching puberty, which has specific signs, makes fasting Ramadan an obligation

From `Abdul-`Aziz ibn `Abdullah ibn Baz to the honorable brother H.S.H., may Allah safeguard you.

As-salamu `alaykum warahmatullah wabarakatuh (May Allah's Peace, Mercy, and Blessings be upon you).
With reference to your question recorded in the Departments of Scholarly Research and Ifta', no. 1180, dated 23 Jumada Al-Awwal, 1407 A.H., in which you stated,

"I have a 13-year old daughter and we conventionally believe that girls only have to fast when they are fifteen years old, but some people said that girls have to fast when they begin to have menstrual periods. Then, when we asked my daughter (about menstruation), she said that the menstrual period started with her three years before, when she was ten years old. So, we want to know the truth, should a girl fast when she is fifteen years old or when she begins to menstruate? And if the girl is to fast when she begins her menstrual period, does she have to make up for missed fast during these three years, knowing that we are really ignorant about this matter and we lack knowledge about it? Please we gratefully hope that you kindly give us an answer.

(Part No. 15; Page No. 174)

A: I would like to inform you that upon reaching the age of puberty, a girl has to fast, knowing that puberty is known through one of the following signs: Reaching fifteen years old, starting menstrual periods, the development of stiff pubic hair, or the flow of female secretion out of lust either when awake or asleep, if her age is under fifteen. Therefore, she has to make up for the days missed since she started to have menstrual periods and she also has to make Kaffarah (expiation) by feeding a Miskin (needy) for every day she missed because of delay in making up for these days until next Ramadan, knowing that the food for every Miskin is half of Sa` (1 Sa`=3 kg. approx.) of staple foodstuff in one's country. However, if she is poor and cannot offer food, she is not required to do so, and then will be sufficient.

May Allah guide us all to that which pleases Him.
As-salamu `alaykum warahmatullah wabarakatuh.

Advice for those Fasting in Ramadaan (Q&A) – Shaykh ibn Al-‘Uthaimeen
Imaam Muhammad bin Saalih Al-‘Uthaimeen
48 Su’aalan fis-Siyaam (binothaimeen.org)
Al-Ibaanah.com

Selected excerpts from the recently released Al-Ibaanah Book publication “Lessons on Fasting, Taraaweeh & Zakaat + 48 Questions & Answers on Fasting”

Question 5

Question: For many people in Ramadaan, their main focus is only that of basking in food and sleep. So Ramadaan becomes a month of laziness and inactivity. Likewise, some people play all night and then sleep during day. What is your advice to these kinds of people?

Answer: I believe that this in reality consists of a waste of time and a waste of money. If people do not have any other objective than to vary their meals, sleep during the day and spend the night doing things that are of no benefit to them, then this is without doubt a waste of a valuable opportunity, which may not repeat itself again for some people in their lifetimes.

Therefore, the determined one is he who goes through Ramadaan the way it should it be done, which is sleeping in the first part of the night, performing the Taraaweeh Prayer, and then standing in prayer during the last part of the night if one is able to. And one should not go to extremes in eating and drinking.

Those who have the ability should strive to feed those who are fasting (when its time to break the fast) either in the masaajid or in other places. This is since whoever feeds a fasting person, he will receive the same reward as the one fasting. So if a person feeds his brothers who are fasting, he will receive the same reward as them. Therefore, those whom Allaah has granted wealth should taken advantage of this opportunity to obtain a great reward.

Question 14

Question: What is the ruling on fasting in Ramadaan when one does not pray?

Answer: The one who fasts but does not pray, his fasting is of no use to him, nor will it be accepted from him, nor will it free him from his indebtedness (of prayer). In fact, fasting is not required on him so long as he does not pray.

This is since one who does not pray is like a Jew and a Christian. So what do you think about a Jew or a Christian that fasts but yet remains upon his religion – is it accepted from him? No. Therefore, we say to this individual: “Repent to Allaah by praying, and (then) fast.” And whoever turns to Allaah in repentance, Allaah will accept his repentance.
Question 23

Question: Should children below the age of fifteen be ordered to fast as in the case with prayer?

Answer: Yes, children who have not yet reached the age of puberty should be ordered to fast if they are able to do it. This is what the Companions would do with their children.

The scholars have stated that a guardian should order whichever youth he possesses guardianship over to fast so that they could practice it and become attached to it, and so that the foundations of Islaam could become instilled in their souls to the point that it becomes like second-nature to them.

However, they are not required to fast if doing so will be difficult on them or bring harm to them. I would like to point out here an issue that some fathers or mothers do, and that is preventing their children from fasting, in direct opposition to what the Companions used to do.

They claim that they are preventing their children from fasting out of mercy and compassion for them. But the reality is that mercy for one’s children is in ordering them to practice the rites of Islaam and to grow accustomed and attached to them. This without a doubt is from the best and most complete forms of raising and cultivating one’s children.

It is authentically reported that the Prophet (sallAllaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:

“Verily a man is a guardian for the members of his household and he will be questioned as to his flock.” [1]

That which is required for guardians with respect to those whom Allaah has given them authority over, such as family members and youth, is that they fear Allaah with regard to them and order them with what they were commanded to order them, such as implementing the rites of Islaam.

Question 27

Question: What is your opinion concerning people who sleep throughout the day in Ramadaan? Some of them pray in congregation while others do not. Is their fast valid?

Answer: The fast of these types of people is valid and they have fulfilled their responsibility. However, it is very deficient and in opposition to what Allaah’s objective is behind fasting. Allaah says:

“O you who believe. Fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you in order that you may gain Taqwaa (fear and dutifulness to Allaah).” [Surah Al-Baqarah: 183]

And the Prophet (sallAllaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:

“Whoever does not abandon false speech, acting upon that (falsehood) and ignorance, then Allaah has no need of him abandoning his food and drink.”

It is well known that missing the prayer and not showing any concern for it is not from Taqwaa (dutifulness to Allaah) nor is it from abandoning acting on falsehood. So it contradicts what Allaah and His Messenger intended by the obligation of fasting.

It is strange that these people sleep the entire day and then spend the whole night awake. Perhaps they may even spend the night engaged in vain pastimes that have no benefit or in doing something unlawful by which they would be acquiring sin.

So my advice to these individuals and their likes is that they fear Allaah and ask Him to help them observe the fast in the manner that He is pleased with, which is spending the fast engrossed in dhikr (remembrance) of Allaah, recitation of the Qur’aan, praying and showing kindness to the creation as well as doing other things mandated in the Religion.

The Prophet (sallAllaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) was the most generous of people, and the most generous that he would be was in the month of Ramadaan when Jibreel would meet him and teach him the Qur’aan. So during this time, the Messenger of Allaah (sallAllaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) would be more generous in spreading good than a pleasant breeze. [2]

Important means to assist the woman during Ramadan by Sheikh Fawzan
Bismillaah, wal-hamdulilaah, was-salaatu was-salaamu ‘alaa rasoolillaah,
as Salaamu ‘Alaykum wa Rahmatullaahi wa Barakaatuh

Translated by Rasheed Barbee (hafidhahullaah)
http://mtws.posthaven.com/important-matters-to-assist-the-women-during

Question:

What are the most important means that will assist the woman upon obedience during the month of Ramadan?

Answer:

(Sheikh Fawzan) The means that will assist the Muslim upon obedience to Allah whether they are male or female are as follows.

1. Fear of Allahسبحانه وتعالى and to believe that He is observing the creation in all of their actions, and statements, and intentions and that He will take them to account for all of that. Therefore if the person is cognizant of this reality then he will busy himself with the obedience of Allah and leave off sins and he will hasten to repent from his wrongdoings.

2. Increase in the remembrance of Allah and the recitation of the Quran because this will soften the heart. Allah the Exalted said, (what can be translated as) ‘Those who believe, and whose hearts find satisfaction in the remembrance of Allah: for without doubt in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find satisfaction’. (Chapter 13 verse 28) And Allah the Exalted said, (what can be translated as) ‘The believers are those who, when Allah is mentioned, feel a tremor in their hearts’. (Chapter 8 verse 2)

3. Avoiding the distractions that harden the heart and distance the individual from Allah, and this is every sin and mixing with evil people and eating from the impermissible and being heedless of the remembrance of Allah the Exalted, and watching the evil films.

4. The woman remaining in her home and not leaving her home except due to a need and then returning quickly to her home upon completion of her need.

5. Sleeping during the night because this will assist the person in waking up during the last part of the night. And sleep a little during the day, this will allow the person to perform their prayers in their respective times, and to busy their time with the obedience of Allah.

6. Guarding their tongues from backbiting and tale carrying and he said she said, bearing false witness and impermissible speech, but rather they should busy their tongue with the remembrance of Allah.

Means to assist you in worship during Ramadan – Explained by Shaykh Muhammad bin Haadi
The following is a summary translation taken from the Lecture
The guidance of the Salaf during Ramadan

Shaykh Muhammad bin Haadee—may Allah preserve him—said:

There are four means mentioned by the scholars that will assist you upon worship; four means that will assist you upon worship in general and in Ramadan specifically. Thus it is upon the slave to reflect and ponder upon them.

From the first means which they mentioned is decreasing the intake of food and drink; the food and drink which results in gluttony. Thus the person will stand up to pray while he is heavy, not able to make rukoo, not able to make sujood. Thus it is upon the person to decrease the food intake. Verily the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said:

مَا مَلَأَ آدَمِيٌّ وِعَاءً شَرًّا مِنْ بَطْنٍ، فَإِنْ كَانَ لَا مَحَالَةَ فَثُلُثٌ طَعَامٌ، وَثُلُثٌ شَرَابٌ، وَثُلُثٌ لِنَفَسِهِ

A human does not fill a more evil container than a stomach. If it is inevitable, then he should reserve his stomach, a third for his food, a third for his drink and a third for his breathing.

Food takes one third; it should not fill the entire stomach; then the person says: The water permeates, and the air is going to come anyway from where it comes from. No, this is not correct. If the person decreases the food, the soul will be light and recuperate. This is the first reason.

The second reason: It is upon you to take the mid-day nap during the day, that which will assist you in standing during the night in Tawareeh prayer, and standing in prayer during the night outside of Ramadan. Take a nap during the day. If you take a nap during the day and you sleep a portion of the night in addition to this you will be recuperated by the permission of Allah the Blessed and Exalted.

The third affair which will assist you in standing in prayer and racing towards obedience is avoiding mixing with the people a lot, by wasting your time with them. It is a must that you preserve your time. For surely mixing with the people a lot is detrimental; even if the only harm that results from it is wasting time, this is sufficient as a detriment. You are responsible for preserving your time.

As for some of the people; mixing with them is like medicine. And some of the people; mixing with them is like nourishment. Some of the people; mixing with them is like a disease. And some of the people; mixing with them is like air.

As for those whom mixing with them is similar to a disease they are the people of evil, they have no good in them. Mixing with them is harmful upon the person in his religion and his worldly life.

As for those whom mixing with them is like nourishment, he is needed sometimes, not all the time. You do not just eat, eat and eat. The most you should eat is three meals a day; a meal in the morning; and in the middle of the day; and in the evening just before going to sleep. Thus mixing with this person is like nourishment, you sit with him for a limited amount of time.

Some of the people; mixing with them is like medicine. You go to this person on occasion. When you are with him your chest expands with that which is permissible. You find with him good speech, pleasant speech; you find with him the poems of the Arabs, information of the Arabs, wisdom and proverbs; that which will expand your chest. Thus your soul is at ease in his presence. You pass the time without disobeying Allah the Blessed and Exalted. Therefore as it relates to this person, if the need arises you sit with him to unwind and relax.

And there are some people; who mixing with them is like air, without it you will die. These are the virtuous people the people of righteousness the people of worship, the people of obedience. Those who it is said about them: Do not accompany except the one who seeing him makes you remember Allah, or his words direct you to Allah.

It was also said: Do not accompany except the one who his condition reminds you of Allah, or his statements direct you to Allah. They are the righteous so accompany them. If you accompany them you will be successful by the permission of Allah. And if you abandon them you may become weak, and perhaps the people of evil and the devils will overpower you. We ask Allah for safety and security.

If you fear this for yourself then adhere to them, because your adhering to them is like air, if you leave it you will die, you will stop breathing. Righteous actions are the nourishment for the soul.

Thus it is not suitable that you mix with everyone—O people; never. The people are on levels. So it is upon the slave to take advantage of these days and it is upon him to know the status of these days and it is upon him to preserve them.

The woman increases more in worship during Ramadan – Sheikh Sulaymaan ar-Ruhaylee
Questioner inquires:

What is the Muslim Woman’s agenda in Ramadan so that she can worship Allah by way of it and at the same time complete the services of the people of her household?

Sheikh Sulaymaan ar-Ruhaylee, may Allah preserve him, answers: We say that the Muslim Woman’s agenda is that of the (Muslim) Mans. However the Muslim Women increases in worship.

That is because when the women strives in the service of her husband and the members of her household and she prepares food for them that which will sufice them, then she is in obedience to Allah, ‘azza wa jall, provided that she seeks the reward from Allah. Therefore, in this is a reward for her and also an increasement for her good deeds.
And it is befitting for the Muslim Women when she is preparing the food that she busys her tongue with the rememberance of Allah. So while she is cooking she glorifies Allah, while she is cooking she is saying tahleel (Laa ilaaha illa Allah/ None has the right to be worshipped except Allah), while she is cooking she is remembering Allah and in that she will have a tremendous reward.
(Like this) preparing food will never divert her from the obedience of her Lord, Glorified is He, during the day of Ramadan.
So congratulations to the Muslim Women who services her husband and the members of her household and she seeks the reward from Allah, ‘azza wa jall, and by that she does not become heedless concerning the rememberance of Allah and she performs what she is capable of doing from the different acts of worship during the day of Ramadan. For indeed she has achieved a great success.
