Kurdish Official: We Won’t Allow Shia Militia Deployment in Kirkuk

President Barzani has said that we won’t accept any other forces in Kurdistan except Peshmerga

A Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) official and Peshmerga Commander in western Kirkuk province has pointed out that it was the Peshmerga who risked their lives to defend Kirkuk against Islamic State (IS), and they are the only force able to protect the entire Kurdistan Region.

In a statement to BasNews, Commander Kamal Kirkuki said that while IS remain financially powerful, they are suffering from a drop in morale.

“If the weather is good, it will be easy to destroy IS insurgents throughout the area,” he said.

Commenting on the deployment of Iraqi Shia militia groups to Kirkuk and the disputed territories, Kirkuki noted, “Nobody accepts Shia militia groups within any part of the Kurdistan Region border, and they will avoid the area because there are Peshmerga. The Peshmerga are a constitutional force and our fighters have risked their lives to protect the area from IS attacks.”

“Kurdistan Region President Massoud Barzani has said that we don’t need Shia militia groups an inch over the Kurdistan border. Other forces than the Peshmerga won’t be tolerated in the area. If we need forces, we will ask our allies,” added Kirkuki.

Local Arab tribes are even more suspicious of the Kurds. They worry the Peshmerga fighters will turn their offensive against Islamic militants into a land grab, retaking territories they have long maintained were stolen from them during the rule of Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein. He pursued an aggressive Arabization policy involving confiscation and eviction of Kurds, Christians and Turkmen.

In a recent news conference in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad, the minister for provincial affairs, Ahmed al-Jabouri, accused Kurdish fighters of “denying the return of Arab residents in localities where IS has been expelled.”

According to Denise Natali, an analyst with the Institute for National Strategic Studies, “U.S.-led efforts to counter the Islamic State with Kurdish Peshmerga partners is having a backlash on Sunni Arab communities.”

She added that “relying on Iraqi Kurds to act as coalition boots on the ground may help eliminate some IS safe havens, but is fueling Kurdish land grabs.
