Citaat:
The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallaam) said:
“Name yourselves by my name, but do not call yourselves by my Kunyah.” (Al Bukhari, the book of manners)
Kunyah (a title that contains the appellation Abu or Umm) is a form of honoring someone. The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallaam) gave the Kunyah “Abu Yahyah” to Suhaib, “Abu Turaab” to Ali, and “Abu Umair” to the brother of Anas while he was still a young child (may Allah be pleased with them).
Narrated Anas: The Prophet(sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallaam) was the best of all people in character. I had a brother called Abu Umair, who I think, had been newly weaned. Whenever he (that child) was brought to the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallaam), he used to say, “O Abu Umair! What did An-Nughair (nightingale) (do)?” It was a nightingale which he used to play with.
Sometimes, the time of prayer became due while He (the Prophet) was in our house. He would order that the rug underneath him be swept and sprayed with water and then he would stand up (for the prayer) and we would line up behind him, and he would lead us in prayer. (Al-Bukhari collected it under the chapter: A child may be given a Kunyah, and one may be given a Kunyah even while a child)
It was a part of the Prophet’s (sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallaam) guidance to give Kunyah to a person who had a son and also to one who had no children. There has not been confirmed narration from the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallaam) only prohibited the Kunyah “Abul Qasim” (i.e. his own Kunyah). Scholars have disagreed regarding it. Some said it is totally impermissible while others have said that it is not permissible to combine it with the Prophet’s name (i.e. Abul Qasim Muhammad), and there is a Hadith to that effect which was declared authentic by Al-Tirmidhi. The more correct opinion is that using the Prophet’s Kunyah, combined or otherwise, is prohibited.
It is recommended for us to have a Kunyah, as Imam Nawawi has said, whether we have children or not. Mother of the believers Ayesha (may Allah be pleased with her) had the Kunyah of Umm Abdullah though she never had any children.

Question 2:
What is the meaning of the words Kunya, Laqab and Shuhrah?
Answer:
Kunyah is honorific starting with 'Abu' for men and 'Um' for women such as Abu Muhammad, Abu `Aly and Um Muhammad and Um `Aly. Laqab is a title that denotes honor as Zaynul-`Abidin or dispraise as Anful-Naqah. Shuhrah means what becomes well-known among people of names, Kunyah or Laqab.
Question 4:
Is it permissible to call a person by the Kunyah of his younger son because his elder son died while he was young?
Answer:
It is recommended to call a person by the Kunyah of his elder son whether his son is dead or alive. But if a person calls him by his younger son, he will not be blamed whether his elder son is alive or dead.
May Allah grant us success. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and Companions.
