US Jewish organization asks Turkish PM to return a courage award he received in 2004

Turkey-Israel relations continue to deteriorate against the backdrop of the latest Gaza crisis. Over the past few days several Turkish universities joined the international academic boycott of Israel and decided to cut off relations with their Israeli counterparts. In the past three days 111 universities joined the boycott.

"In Gaza, there has been a great tragedy of humanity. The whole world is not reacting to it, as if they were all deaf and blind. The Israeli government has lost its discernment and attacks cruelly by putting the children in front of guns," the joint public announcement read. "In Ramadan, the holy month of Islamic world, people are having their iftar [break-fast] meal through the bombs with tears, grief and sorrow. Unfortunately, everyone who closes their eyes to these cruel people and this kind of cruelty is a sharer of that violence," it said.

It went on to say that legal measures would be taken to force Israel to pay compensation to killed or injured Palestinians in Gaza. "May Allah’s peace and mercy be upon our casualties killed in the attacks of Zionist Israel," it stated.

Also this week 12 municipalities across Turkey announced a boycott of Israeli products and of companies linked to Israel, Turkish Yeni Safak reported.

Social media sites have been listing goods produced in Israel and companies linked to the country. Some are even banning Coca-Cola because of US support for Israel.

"It is important to emphasize that we should not give any logistical support to Israeli violence. With this understanding, we decided to make clear our attitude by not selling Coca-Cola products and others which support the illegal Zionist expansionist policies of Israel," Sakir Yucel Karaman, mayor of Istanbul’s Gungoren district, said according to the report.

"We should at least support our side in such [a] situation [where] Muslim countries have subsided into a silence," Hilmi Turkmen, mayor of the city’s Uskudar district, said.

One of Turkey's largest unions, TESK, called Sunday for supermarkets, stores and shops to boycott Israeli goods.

TESK President Bendevi Palandöken told Turkish press that the confederation "is seriously considering a call for a boycott on Israeli goods." "We are currently determining which companies and products can be included in a boycott list," he was quoted as having said. "Turkish people are rather sensitive to the Gaza conflict and we have to heed the voice of the public, we can call for a boycott anytime," he added.

All through the crisis, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has continued his verbal attacks of Israel over its operation in Gaza. Erdogan has threatened to end the normalization process with Israel over "state terrorism," and also accused Israel of "lies" because "not enough" Israeli Jews have died in the conflict.

In light of Erdogan's remarks a US Jewish organization has asked the PM to return a courage award he received in 2004.

"In 2004, the American Jewish Congress presented its prestigious Profile of Courage award to you as an individual and as a global leader for your stances on fighting terrorism, working to secure a peaceful solution for Israelis and Palestinians, rejecting fundamentalism and being steadfast in your commitment to protect the Jewish citizens of Turkey," American Jewish Congress (AJC) President Jack Rosen said in a July 23 letter sent to Erdogan.

"And now, we want it back," Rosen added.

"A decade after we gave you our award, you have become arguably the most virulent anti-Israel leader in the world—spewing dangerous rhetoric for political gain and inciting the Turkish population to violence against the Jewish people," Rosen said in the letter. "Your current positions, as reported in the media, are abhorrent and your attacks on Jews call into question everything we honored you for."

Erdogan stressed that the award was given to him "in the early days" of his tenure as prime minister.

"Our relations with Israel were not like today, at the time ... Did we accept those medals as bribery and become silent? I have the strongest voice against the massacres in Gaza today," Erdogan said.
