Bekijk volle/desktop versie : Islamic Jew-hatred' ads with Hitler adorn DC buses

Bus ads linking "Islamic Jew-hatred" with Adolf Hitler are rolling through the streets of Washington, DC, with First Amendment protections guaranteeing they will remain a regular sight on the beltway for some time to come.

The 15-foot-long (4.6m) ads have been plastered on the elongated broadsides of some 20 buses in the DC metro area. The bus add features a photo of Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler seated alongside his “staunch ally” Haj Amin al-Husseini, the Palestinian nationalist and grand mufti of Jerusalem who allied himself with the Third Reich before and during World War II.

"Islamic Jew-hatred: It's in the Quran. Two-thirds of all US aid goes to Islamic countries. Stop racism. End all aid to Islamic countries," the text of the ad reads, with a fine-print disclaimer from the city’s Metro transit authority.

The ads, which are to run until mid-June, were placed by the American Freedom Defense Initiative (AFDI), a self-proclaimed human rights group with has been accused of being an anti-Islam hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center and the Anti-Defamation League.

The AFDI says their ads are “response to the vicious Jew-hating ads that American Muslims for Palestine (AMP) unleashed on Washington, DC, Metro buses last month.”

The ads in question, which bore an image of US personification Uncle Sam with an Israeli flag in hand, were placed around the DC area on April 15 – tax day.

“We’re sweating April 15 so Israelis don’t have to! Stop US aid to Israel’s occupation!” the ad by the Illinois-based pro-Palestinian group read.

Dr. Osama Abu Irshaid, a board member for AMP, said that during tough economic times when Americans were struggling to pay their taxes, “our hard-earned money is going to a country that has implemented the last and longest-lasting military occupation in the modern world.”

AFDI President Pamela Geller, who described the AMP ad as “Jew hating” and “libelous”, took particular umbrage with the depiction of Uncle Sam in the sticker.

“Uncle Sam with the Star of David. Nuts. Think about the billions we are giving to Muslim Brotherhood jihadists in Egypt and Libya, Gaza, Judea and Samaria, the Taliban in Afghanistan, etc. A flag of jihad would be more appropriate,” she said.

Gellar told the Times of Israel by email that she never considered not responding to the AMP campaign.

“When is it ever advantageous to let a lie stand unchallenged by the truth? The truth is always appropriate — now more than ever,” she wrote.

AMP spokeswoman, Kristin Szremski, told the Washington Post that over-the-top rhetoric was par for the course when it came to the AFDI.

“We typically don’t react to Pamela Geller, because this is the kind of thing she does, countering political speech with racist, Islamophobic speech,” Szremski said.

When asked why the latest AFDI add was given the green light, a spokeswoman for Metro told AFP "We're not able to refuse ads on the basis of content," citing a 2012 court case involving a separate AFDI campaign.

In September 2012, AFDI ran a series of ads in the New York City subway reading "In any war between the civilized man and the savage, support the civilized man. Support Israel. Defeat Jihad.” Later that year, a federal judge ordered the Metro to display the ads following a suit filed by AFP on First Amendment Grounds.

Geller said the case as a “major victory” in the “war on free speech,” noting the latest campaign would have never got off the ground if it were not for the previous legal challenge.

Pope Francis was caught in an argument with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday over the language Jesus Christ spoke.

On the last day of his trip to the Middle East the pontiff met with Netanyahu at a public event in Notre Dame Center in Jerusalem.

During his comments about a strong connection between Judaism and Christianity and tolerance towards Christians in Israel, Netanyahu told the Francis: "Jesus was here, in this land. He spoke Hebrew."

"Aramaic," the pontiff interjected.

"He spoke Aramaic, but he knew Hebrew," Netanyahu shot back.

The difference of opinion reignites a historic debate about the language Jesus spoke two millennia ago.

"Jesus was a native Aramaic speaker," Israeli linguistics professor Ghil'ad Zuckermann told Reuters. "But he would have also known Hebrew because there were extant religious writings in Hebrew."

Zuckermann added that during Jesus' time, Hebrew was spoken by the lower classes - "the kind of people he ministered to."

Aramaic is closely related to Hebrew and was widely spoken across the ancient Middle East. Today it is mostly defunct and is used only by small isolated communities.

On Monday Pope Francis concluded his three day visit to the Middle East. In efforts to encourage the stalled peace process he invited Israeli President Shimon Peres and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to the Vatican next month

Israel is trying out a new sort of “flexible evictions” in its quest to root out the “illegal” Bedouin village of Al-Araqib, demolished 63 times to date. Now even those buried in the village cemetery are reportedly receiving eviction orders.

The Arab Bedouin village, located in the arid Negev desert but still troubling the Israeli authorities ever since the first full-scale demolition in 2010, is dealing with its latest challenge: eviction orders for the deceased, rights activist Michal Rotem writes on +972 independent blog.

According to Rotem, who is a member of the joint Arab-Jewish group Negev Coexistence Forum for Civil Equality (NCF), eight eviction orders were placed on structures in the cemetery at Al-Araqib last Wednesday.

While receiving eviction orders is nothing new for the Bedouins, who for years have been defiantly rebuilding the unrecognized village, this time the recipients’ names could have sent chills down some spines. The orders were partly issued against those no longer living in the village – and buried in the cemetery, where the Israelis placed eviction notes.

According to the NCF, the cemetery, along with several homes and a small improvised mosque, has so far been left untouched by the Israeli authorities. However, it soon might change as “flexible” evictions are to take place between June 12 and July 12, 2014. Hinting at what the author called “a new and disturbing development, with far-reaching implications beyond the confines of Al-Araqib itself” is the fact that the authorities have for some reasons photographed the buildings at the cemetery “for the first time.”

In response to the latest eviction orders, Al-Araqib’s Sheikh Sayah Al-Turi said in a statement, quoted by the NCF:

“To all the Jews who believe in equality and that it is possible for Arabs and Jews to live together, mobilize in support of truth and justice and stand up for every Bedouin home.”

“The state tells the Bedouin: you don’t have a place in the Negev or in Israel. This is a great loss for the Bedouin and a great loss for the Jews. As long as there is no recognition of Bedouin rights to their lands, there will be no peace in the region, no equality and no justice.”

he farcical situation is only the latest move of the Israeli government in what the rights activists have blasted as “discrimination” and “ethnic cleansing” of the 40,000-strong Bedouin population in the occupied Palestinian lands. Israel has also been dumping city waste right next to some of the Bedouin settlements in the desert, prompting health concerns from environmental experts.

The villagers earlier addressed the Guinness Book of World Records to register the ruinous “record” of Israel when the demolition count reached 38.

Locals told Ma’an news agency, that the recent developments were “very dangerous.”

“Israel has declared war against us from all directions,” a local council head Labbad Abu Affash told the agency. “Where do they plan to evacuate us? To the moon?”
