Taken from the work of Imam Barbahaari's Sharh Us Sunnah p.40.

First and foremost we have to remember that the Prophet (salAllaahu alayhi wa salaam) said: Cling to the jama'ah of muslims and their Imam." [Bukhari, 3/1319 No.3411, & Muslim 3/1470 No.1847]

The jama'ah can "NOT" therefore be established except with two matters:

The first matter: That it's methodology is (based on) the Qur'an and the Sunnah; it should neither be based on "the thoughts of a particular person" nor the "opinion of so and so". Rather, it should be based on the Qur'an and Sunnah.

The second matter: It must have a leader (Imam) who leads it and to whom it's affairs return. It is NOT possible for a jama'ah to assemble without a leader. There must be a leader (who serves) as a reference. Thus, the Prophet (salAllaahu alayhi wa salaam) said to Hudhayfah (radiAllaahu ta'ala anhu): "Cling to the jama'ah of muslims and their Imam." Hudhayfah asked: What if they do not have a jama'ah or a (muslim) leader?" He (salAllaahu alayhi wa salaam) said: "Stay away from all those sects."

He (salAllaahu alayhi wa salaam) instructed him to stay away from all the sects and that he should not stay except with the jama'ah of the muslims; and that he should not stay with the jamaa'at (groups) other than the jama'ah of the muslims. Rather, he should remain alone upon the truth until death approaches him while he is upon that.

This shows that a person should not be with the jama'ah that is in opposition to the true methodology and that there will be no jama'ah except with two conditions: That its methodology be based on the Qur'an, Sunnah, and the methodology of the righteous predecessors; and that they must have a muslim leader to whom their affairs are referred.
