Orthodoxe joden moeten hoogstwaarschijnlijk hun dienstplicht vervullen.
Een commissie van de Israëlische regering heeft woensdag een voorstel goedgekeurd voor een hervorming van de dienstplichtwet die geen uitzonderingen voor religieuze studenten meer toestaat. Het kabinet en de Knesset moeten zich nog over de hervorming uitspreken.
Ultra-orthodoxe joden in Israël zijn decennialang vrijgesteld van de militaire dienst, die voor de meeste overige burgers verplicht is. Onder deze gewone Israëliërs is hier grote onvrede over ontstaan, omdat hun zonen en dochters hun leven in de waagschaal moeten stellen voor de landsverdediging en ultra-orthodoxe studenten hun tijd kunnen besteden aan het bestuderen van oude geschriften.
Onder de wetswijziging moeten alle Israëlische mannen van 17 jaar zich melden voor de dienst. Voor religieuze studenten wordt nog steeds een uitzondering gemaakt, maar vanaf hun 21e zijn ook zij aan de beurt.

Door de veranderende demografie in Israël is dit echt wel noodzakelijk
Vroeger waren charedim maar zo'n 2 a 5 % in de beginjaren, momenteel zijn ze met zo'n 10% (een klein miljoen)
En dit weegt op de belastingbetaler...

Omdat de seculiere Israëlische bevolking het oneerlijk vindt dat zij VERPLICHT worden om dienstplicht te doen terwijl de charedim hele dagen studeren op kosten van de Israëlische belastingbetaler
Daarom zegt men vanaf nu: iedereen gelijk voor de wet

I have learned today that you are due to perform in Israel very soon. We have never met, though I believe we are mutually respectful of each other’s path and work. It would grieve me to know you are putting yourself in danger (soul danger) by performing in an apartheid country that is being boycotted by many global conscious artists. You were not born when we, your elders who love you, boycotted institutions in the US South to end an American apartheid less lethal than Israel’s against the Palestinian people. Google Montgomery Bus Boycott, if you don’t know about this civil rights history already. We changed our country fundamentally, and the various boycotts of Israeli institutions and products will do the same there. It is our only nonviolent option and, as we learned from our own struggle in America, nonviolence is the only path to a peaceful future.
