Ismail Haniyeh, Hamas leader warmly greeted in Tunis

The senior leader of the Palestinian islamist movement Hamas, Ismail Haniyeh, arrived in Tunis during the early afternoon of January 5th.

His trip to Tunis, follows similar visits to Egypt, Sudan and Turkey.

Tunisian Prime Minister Hamadi Jebali as well as the leader of the Tunisia’s Islamist political party Ennahda Rached Ghanouchi, along with other members of the Tunisian government welcomed the delegation of over twenty aides and Haniyeh at Tunis-Carthage Airport.

A crowd of over 600 Tunisians holding Palestinian, Tunisian and Salafist-Islamist Caliphate flags welcomed Haniyeh and his party and chanted slogans calling for the liberation of Palestine, the non-recognition of Israel and Tunisia’s commitment to the Palestinian cause.

After the warm reception, Haniyeh accompanied Hamadi Jebli to the El Kasba Palace where he gave a press conference.

Haniyeh congratulated the Tunisian people on behalf of all Palestinians for the success of the Tunisian Revolution and the success of Tunisia’s democratic process.

He expressed his appreciation that despite all the challenges Tunisian people are facing, “they are still standing for the Palestinian cause.”

In the wake of the Arab Spring that was initiated in Tunisia, many arab countries have witnessed a rise of Islamism. Ismail Haniya considers the Arab Spring as prelude to a new era of mutual collaboration between Tunisians and Palestinians.

Haniyeh expressed his appreciation for the invitation to visit Tunisia. “We have suffered from an economic and political blockade. Former governments have neglected us but through this invitation, Tunisia has given justice to Gaza,” he said.

Haniyeh is scheduled to have dinner with President Moncef Marzouki in the Carthage Place. The rest of his stay in Tunisia, which has been scheduled by the Ennahda party as well as several Tunisian civil society organizations will include visits to Tunisia’s inland regions where the Tunisian Revolution was initiated.
