(ANSAmed) - ROME - Despite spending two days of her fourteen-day existence under rubble, the terrible earthquake that has hit the province of Van spared two-week old Azra, who was trapped in a sort of airspace in the rubble and miraculously escaped without a scratch from the collapse of her home inErcis, the worst-affected town along with Van. Pictures of the tiny baby, who was immediately wrapped in a blanket and with a tiny and emaciated leg protruding, have been beamed around the world. The baby was taken to hospital amid applause and cries from those present and her family is also expected to survive. The baby's mother and grandmother remain trapped under the rubble but are alive, with rescuers working to free them. The father, however, is missing.
The death toll, meanwhile, has risen to 366, while 1,301 people are currently reported to have been injured. Figures from the administration for disasters and emergencies, the earthquake, which had a magnitude of 7.2 on the Richter scale, has caused 2,262 buildings to collapse, and thousands of people slept in the open in Van last night. Hundreds of rescuers continue to work around the clock, and continued through the night in spite of harsh weather conditions, repaid by the rescue of Azra.
