Adnan Januzaj has been impressing in Manchester United’s reserve side. Januzaj, who is of Kosovan heritage but with Belgium nationality, has even drawn comparisons to David Beckham.
The creative midfielder has been a major part of Warren Joyce’s side this season. The Belgian normally operates on the right hand side of midfield despite being left footed. Januzaj, who is a set piece expert, aware of what’s going on around him, quick and very skilful on the ball.
Januzaj first came to people’s attention when he was seen performing skills at half time during an Anderlecht game. The youngster started his career with FC Brussels, but he caught the attention of Anderlecht and was signed by the Belgian giants.
Manchester United were aware of Januzaj’s talent, but with FIFA rules stipulating that players under the age of 16 can not move between European clubs, United had to wait until Adnan turned 16 on February the 5th 2011.
Anderlecht were desperate to keep hold of one of their most promising talents, but were not going to stand in the way of Januzaj joining one of the biggest clubs in the world.
After Adnan turned 16, Manchester United approached Januzaj. With the Belgian keen to join the Red Devils, United settled an development fee with Anderlecht, reported to be around £300,000. On Januzaj joining Manchester United, he signed a four year contract and was the highest paid youngster at the club, earning an estimated £2,000 pounds a week.
Within his first few games at under-18 level, Januzaj looked to be a key part of Paul McGuinness side, but injury saw the end to his season.
Since his return from injury, Adnan has featured heavily for both the reserves. Despite his lean figure, United are giving Januzaj more competitive football in order for him to be ready for first team football.
His recent performances have even drawn praise from Sir Alex Ferguson.
“Adnan is a beautifully balanced player.” Ferguson recently told inside united magazine.
“He has to grow into his frame but he has good balance, good acceleration and is a very good technical player. Januzaj and Nick Powell were in the reserves recently and you say to yourself, these are definite Manchester United first team players.”
With Ferguson full of praise and with Manchester United lacking in real quality out wide, Januzaj may get his chance on United’s pre season tour next season. If he impresses, he could well feature for United next season.
