RABAT (Hassan al-Ashraf)
Health and nutrition experts in Morocco warned of the dangers of weight-gain pills sometime used by young girls to increase their weight and cautioned that some types of pills were not fit for human consumption.
To get a curvy, feminine body, young girls in Morocco have been increasingly resorting to buying weight-gain pills available at cosmetic shops or sometimes sold by street vendors. They also buy herbal mixtures and natural remedies sold at herb shops.
Girls want to gain weight to avoid the harsh criticism that either comes from friends or husbands
Health expert Mohamed Brisole Some young women consider slim body not a standard of beauty in their immediate and social environment and they resort to weight-gain pills in order to look attractive and desirable.
Saeida, a vendor of weight-gain pills, said her clients came from different social classes and age groups and denied the perception that only young women seek to gain weight.
“Women from all classes and age groups buy those pills due to their quick effect,” she said. “They are also very cheap compared to other types of solutions.”
For 16-year-old Karima, those pills were the only way she could get rid of her slim body.
“My friends made fun of me because of how thin I was,” she said. “So, I had to look for a fast way to become more feminine and have curves.”
Health expert Mohamed Brisole said social pressures drive many girls to using weight-gain pills in order to gain more acceptance.
“Girls want to gain weight to avoid the harsh criticism that either comes from friends or husbands,” he said.
Brisole added that the real danger is when girls use imported drugs without knowing what their use is in the first place.
“Several drugs come from abroad, like Spain, and are mainly used for fattening beef, hence not suitable for human consumption. This can have dangerous effects on women’s body.”
Nutrition and diet expert Asmaa Zerioul said that what makes using weight-gain pills a phenomenon in Morocco is the availability of those mixtures both on the internet and in local spas.
“Some girls even attempt to prepare the mixtures themselves without realizing how dangerous the ingredients can be,” she told AlArabiya.net.
Zerioul added that girls who don’t resort to popular mixtures or weight gain pills tend to use weight-gain pharmaceutical drugs containing cortisol, allergy drugs, or some types of antidepressants.
“Girls buy medicines originally specialized in treating specific diseases or disorders and gaining weight is just among their side effects.”
According to Zerioul, using these types of drugs usually leads to gaining weight in the upper part of the body and the face, which might give the woman the look she seeks, but this can lead to a number of health problems.
“When fat is distributed unevenly and artificially, several problems occur later, including obesity, diabetes, and hormonal imbalances.”
When asked what girls should do if they want to gain weight without taking risks, Zerioul replied that they have to go through medical examinations to know if their slimness is due to a physical reason or just because the diet they’re following is not suitable.
“Depending on the reasons, the girl would know who to go to in order to gain weight in a healthy way and based on the instructions of experts,” she concluded.
