Kerk VS betaalt slachtoffers seksueel misbruik half miljard euro

LOS ANGELES - Het aartsbisdom Los Angeles betaalt vijfhonderd slachtoffers die zeggen seksueel misbruikt te zijn door geestelijken een totaalbedrag van 660 miljoen dollar (479 miljoen euro) om af te zien van hun aanklacht.

Het is hiermee de grootste schikking ooit in een zedenzaak. Dat hebben de gezamenlijke advocaten van de slachtoffers zondagochtend gemeld.
De eerste rechtzaak zou maandag beginnen. Het betreft twaalf jongens die zouden zijn misbruikt door een twee decennia terug overleden priester.


Getuigen

Als de zaak voorgekomen was, hadden de advocaten kardinaal Roger Mahony, de aartsbisschop van Los Angeles, gevraagd te getuigen. Zij hadden hem dan in de rechtszaal ter verantwoording geroepen over alle zedenzaken van de afgelopen halve eeuw.

Strafrechtelijk zijn de zaken inmiddels verjaard, maar de slachtoffers konden nog wel in civiele procedures schadevergoedingen eisen.

Schikking

Naar alle waarschijnlijkheid moet de katholieke kerk bezittingen gaan verkopen om de schikking te kunnen bekostigen. De Los Angeles Times heeft geschat dat het aartsbisdom Los Angeles onroerend goed bezit ter waarde van vier miljard dollar (2,9 miljard euro).

Goede zaak! Slachtoffers van sexueel misbruik moeten vergoeding krijgen en de schuldigen moeten betalen! Gelukkig leven de meesten in de Westerse wereld in een omgeving waar zonder schaamte en taboe over sexueel misbruik kan worden gepraat. Anders zouden dit soort zaken nooit naar buiten kunnen komen (zie andere culturen!) en zullen de slachtoffers nooit gehoord kunnen worden!

UP TO 100,000 Muslim children studying in Britain’s madrassas are at “significant risk” of physical or [SIZE=3]sexual[/SIZE] abuse, according to the Muslim Parliament of Great Britain.

In an appeal today for a national register of the country’s 700 mosque schools, Ghayasuddin Siddiqui, its leader, will say that local imams are not taking their duty to protect children seriously and are exposing young girls and boys to lasting damage.

[SIZE=4]Failure to tackle this taboo[/SIZE] and implement a transparent, co-ordinated child protection scheme could leave the community open to [SIZE=4]“an avalanche of child sex-abuse scandals”[/SIZE] similar to those of the Roman Catholic Church in the 1990s.

The move came after it emerged that up to 40 per cent of teachers in madrassas hit or scold their children, [SIZE=4]between 15 and 20 cases of sex abuse occur each year,[/SIZE] and that many imams were unaware of their legal duties. Madrassas are largely unregulated after-school clubs run by mosques, to teach children about the Koran and how to speak Arabic. Although they are obliged to follow the laws set down by the Children Act 1989, no single body such as Ofsted monitors their performance and they are accountable to no one. Some madrassas educate up to 500 children.

Dr Siddiqui will call today for the Government to help madrassas to give better protection. Tales of children having their heads beaten against the wall for not working properly are commonplace, he says, and few imams recognise the need to be accountable.
While he makes an attack in his report on the culture of many madrassas, he also criticises town councils and police, saying: “It is not acceptable for local authorities and the police not to take this challenge seriously for fear of being accused of cultural insensitivities.” Ignoring abuse put thousands of children at risk, he added.

On his hospital bed last week, 16-year-old Abid Tanoli sat listless and alone, half of his body covered by burns that all but destroyed both his eyes and left his face horribly disfigured.

The teenager talked, with difficulty, of how his life had been destroyed since the fateful day in June 2002 [SIZE=4]when he refused to have sex with his teacher at a religious school in Pakistan.

The boy was horrifically injured in an acid attack after he rebuffed the Muslim cleric's sexual advances. Now, he has alarmed Pakistan's powerful religious establishment by pressing charges against his alleged assailants.
