Baghdad, 15 June (AKI) - US soldiers on Friday reportedly arrested three Iranian diplomats north of Baghdad. The officials had first been detained by Iraqi forces who had subsequently freed them, allegedly after the intervention of the Iraqi foreign ministry. In January, US troops arrested five Iranians in the northern Iraqi city of Erbil, saying they were Pasdaran officials helping Shiite insurgents in Iraq. Tehran claims the five, still detained by the US, are diplomats.
Washington has repeatedly accused Iran of funding, arming and training Iraqi insurgents, a claim rejected by Tehran during direct talks on 28 May - the first bilateral meeting between the two countries in 27 years.
