Ahmet Ertegun, Founding Chairman of Atlantic Records, was born in Istanbul, Turkey on July 31, 1923. The son of the Turkish Ambassador to the United States, Mehmet Munir Ertegun, Ahmet was raised in Switzerland, Paris, London, an Washington, D.C. A passionate music fan and collector, Ertegun founded Atlantic Records in New York City in the fall of 1947 - signing artists, producing records, writing songs, and supervising the fedgling label.

Under Ahmet's direction, Atlantic evolved from a groundbreaking, independent R&B and Jazz label into one of the world's preeminent music companies - forming a legacy that includes such icons as Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Jonh Coltrane, Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin. Ahmet was founder and Chairman of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In recognition of his pioneerin contributions to popular music, he was himself elected to the Hall of Fame in 1987, and the Museum's main exhibition hall in Cleveland bears his name. In 2000 he was honored as a ''Living Legend'' by the United States Library of Congress, on the occasion of the Bicentennial.

Ahmet's 2006 injury and death

Ahmet Ertegün (83) was injured after a fall at a Rolling Stones New York performance on October 29, 2006 for, former US President, Bill Clinton's 60th birthday.[2]. Ertegün slipped and hit his head backstage. After being in a positive stable situation, Ertegün took a turn for the worse. This announcement was made by Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page during his induction into the UK Music Hall of Fame.[3] Ertegün slipped into a coma and died later, with his family by his side, on December 14, 2006 at New York Presbyterian Hospital-Weill Cornell Medical Center.[4][5] He was buried December 18 in the Garden of Sufi Tekke, Özbekler Tekkesi in Sultantepe, Üsküdar, İstanbul, next to his brother Nasuhi Ertegün, his father Münir Ertegün and his shaikh great-grandfather Şeyh İbrahim Edhem Efendi, who was once the head of the tekke in his native Turkey. At the garden were hundreds of mourners, including his wife Mica, members of the Ertegun family, Turkish dignitaries and entertainers including Atlantic artist Kid Rock.[1] A memorial service will be held in New York in the New Year, an Atlantic Records spokesman said.
