st - Coal, oil and gas you have to import daily, which are often costs that are not calculated within the construction costs.
nd -Renewables decrease your import. This is the reason why Morocco always imports more than it exports
rd - Renewables are the future and attract investment. Like last COP in Bonn, Morocco got funds worth hundred of millions of dollar. He wouldn't get it if it was for a coal plant.
th: Did you know that many countries create laws to protect their fossil fuel industry and create laws to prevent the growth of solar. Spain is a good example.
th - Morocco marketing itself as a green country helps also to get other investments, like ecological tourism. It creates good will to our country, especially from wealthy open minded social countries, like Canada, Sweden, France etc ...
th: Renewables create a lot more jobs than fossil fuel plants. This is a big advantage of these technology in a world with decreasing jobs due to robots
th: Renewables increase your energy independence from foreign countries.
th - If every country in the world can create its own energy, we probably would have a lot less wars in the middle east.
th: Ever heard of the Dutch desease. That is the problem what most fossil fuels countries in the middle east are coping with. From Algeria to Saoudia Arabia. UAE, Qatar, Kuwait (small countries) and Norway seem to be a few exceptions.
th - Scientifically, Morocco has one of the largest potential for renewable energy in the world.
th - Renewables are good for your health and therefore decrease your paycheck at the hospital and the governments health budget. Many diseases are related to fossil fuels, polluted air and waters. It just improves your quality of life
I could go on and on. You are definitely right though that on the short term solar is expensive, especially Morocco's choice for the type of solar it is investing in. Nevertheless, renewables have so many advantages for societies on the long term. It actually is very bad that most people on this planet think only about short term benefits.
Lastly, did you know that oil and gas is often only cheaper in the world, because governments subsidize these forms of energies. Fossil fuels got in 2014 for example 5 trillion dollars of subsidies due to lobbies.(Nobody hears about it in the news). Renewable energies could only dream of those kind of subsidies, but their is a slow shift happening since COP21 in Paris. In addition, the price of solar is decreasing every year with 20 percent, especially due to economies of scale. Every new technology start expensive and decreases in time by price due to economies of scale. Did you know that producing solar energy per kWh is already cheaper then fossil fuels (including coal) in countries like UAE and India. So hopefully you won't cringe too much in the future about green investments. It is something new and as we know most people don't like change (especially old political elites), until they cannot avoid it ..
