48 Percent of Moroccans Paid Bribes for Public Services in Last 12 Months
Rabat – Approximately 48 percent of Moroccans paid a bribe to officials while trying to access public services over the past year, 18 points higher than the regional average of 30 percent, according to a report on the prevalence of corruption in the Middle East and North Africa by Transparency International, released on Tuesday.
Only 14 percent of Algerians reported paying a bribe while attempting to access public schools, public health services, identity documents, utility services, police assistance or court adjudication. In Morocco, the bribery rate stood at 48 percent.

Ondanks dat omkoping in de Arabische wereld veel voorkomt, is Marokko kennelijk een geval apart. Terwijl bijv. in algerije het afgelopen jaar 14% van de burgers reshwa betaalde om toegang te krijgen tot openbare voorzieningen zoals scholen, zorg, identiteitsbewijzen etc. moest in een jaar tijd 48% van de Marokkanen steekpenningen dokken.
