Armed terrorist groups kill dozens of Syrians in Homs: State media

Armed terrorist groups have killed dozens of Syrian civilians, including 25 children, in a town in the central province of Homs, state media say.
According to the official Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), the “armed terrorist groups” killed the civilians on Saturday in the town of Houla, about 32 kilometers (20 miles) northwest of the provincial capital city of Homs.
Clashes also broke out between Syrian forces and the armed groups in Houla.
Several members of the armed groups and a number of Syrian forces were also killed in the fighting, SANA said.
The opposition Syrian National Council, however, blamed the Damascus government for the violence in Houla.
A team of UN observers arrived in Houla after the deadly clashes to investigate the situation.
The latest attack by armed groups in Syria was carried out despite a ceasefire that took effect on April 12.
Reports say about 250 UN observers are currently monitoring the ceasefire, which was part of a six-point peace plan proposed by UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan in March.
On April 21, the UN Security Council met and unanimously voted on Resolution 2043 to send a mission of 300 observers to Syria.
The Security Council “established, for an initial 90-day period, a supervision mission, to be known as UNSMIS, comprising an initial and expeditious deployment of up to 300 unarmed military observers, including an appropriate civilian component and air transportation assets, to monitor a cessation of armed violence in all its forms by all parties,” reads Resolution 2043.
On May 25, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said in a letter to the Security Council that “established terrorist groups” could have been behind some of the recent bombings in Syria.
The deadliest bombings in recent days were carried out in the south of the capital, Damascus, on May 10. Syrian state TV said “terrorists” were responsible for the two bomb attacks that killed 55 people and injured about 400 others.
