Death By Firing Squad
Updated: 09:03, Tuesday February 14, 2006
Two Australians have been sentenced to death by firing squad for attempting to smuggle drugs out of Indonesia.
Myuran Sukumaran and Andrew Chan, both from Sydney, were part of a gang of nine Australians caught with 18lbs of heroin.
Activists from an anti-drugs group inside the Indonesia court shouted "Hooray. Long live the judges" when the verdicts were read out.
Two drug couriers were also sentenced to life in jail, the same punishment handed down to two others the day before.
Prosecutors had said Chan, 22, was the "driving engine" of the operation.
He was arrested at Bali airport after police had caught four defendants with packages of heroin strapped to their bodies.
The court was told that Sukumaran, 24, helped strap the packages on the couriers and planned the operation.
Australia had earlier urged the Indonesian authorities not to impose the death penalty on any of the group.
Foreign Minister Alexander Downer said the government would plead for clemency for any defendant condemned to die.
Chan's lawyers said they would appeal.
The two Australians given life were Michael Czugaj, 20, from Brisbane and Martin Stephens, 29, of Wollongong.
