MEKNES, Sep. 08 – HM King Mohammed VI of Morocco launched Wednesday in Meknes (east of Rabat), the first phase of a housing project, dubbed “Assanoubar” that would benefit to military men. The project, that comprises 210 houses and cost 28 million Dhs (USD 3.1 million), is funded by the Military Housing and Equipment Agency (AMEM).It is part of a larger project that aims at building 834 houses for an overall estimated cost of 116 million Dhs (USD 12.8 million). HM King Mohammed VI also visited the industrial zone of Mejjat where he inquired about industrial activities in the region. The development of the Mejjat industrial zone, that comprises 380 industrial units, has necessitated an investment of 71 million Dhs (USD 7.8 million). The zone is expected to drain investments of nearly 3.54 billion Dhs (USD 393 million) and to generate 11,800 jobs. Another industrial zone “Sidi Slimane Moul kifane” is expected to draw nearly 1.5 billion Dhs (USD 166 million) and to produce 4,800 jobs. Sidi Slimane Moul kifane comprises 175 industrial units. So far, the two zones have attracted investments valued at 904 million Dhs (USD 100 million). Since 2001, investments in various productive sectors in the region of Meknes-Tafilalt have been estimated at 10 billion Dhs (USD 1.11 billion) and have generated over 21,200 jobs. The housing and construction sector had the lion share with an investment of over 6.5 billion Dhs (USD 772 million), followed by tourism and industry. Besides, HM the king inquired about the program for the fight of unhealthy housing and projects under construction to stop this phenomenon. He also handed title deeds to some of the beneficiaries.
