Russia offers Amur 1650 Submarine to Morocco

ST.PETERSBURG, July 4 (Itar-Tass) - The Russian arms export/import agency Rosoboronexport has been promoting its non-nuclear submarine, the Amur 1650, on world markets. It intends to offer the submarine to Morocco if the tenders are held there, Rosoboronexport Deputy chief Viktor Komardin declared at an international naval show on Thursday.

If Morocco announces the tenders for a submarine we will take part and offer the Amur 1650, Komardin said.

Rosoboronexport intends to develop military cooperation with Morocco, Komardin said. He stressed the significance of an agreement on international economic cooperation that Russia had recently signed with Morocco. Recently, Russia has delivered to Morocco a batch of Msta-S self-propelled howitzers, he said.

Morocco is showing an active interest in weapons for air defense and ground troops, Komardin said. It is for Morocco to make a choice now, he added. Komardin highly appreciates the level of professional training of Morocco's officers who have recently attended a presentation show of Russian-made weapons.

The Amur 1650 submarine was designed by the Rubin Naval Design Bureau based in St.Petersburg which belongs to the United Shipbuilding Corporation.

The maximum diving range of the submarine is 300 meters. The submarine is capable to carry 18 missiles, torpedoes or mines.

Earlier, a number of media outlets said that Morocco intended to buy its first submarine. Russia and Germany were mentioned as possible exporters.

Morocco has take delivery of 88 BearCat 4x4 armoured vehicles for the Moroccan Auxiliary Forces.

Lenco Industries, Inc., the global leader in the design and manufacture of armored police vehicles, recently completed delivery of 88 BearCat® armored vehicles to the Moroccan Auxiliary Forces. The BearCat® is part of Lenco’s line of light and medium armored response vehicles, which are used by hundreds of Specialized Tactical teams in the United States and abroad.

According to Senior Colonel Geng Yansheng, spokesman of the Ministry of National Defense (MND) of the With military grade armor materials, an open floor plan and a powerful 4x4 system, the BearCat® can easily accommodate 10 to 12 operators across rugged terrain. The BearCat can also reach speeds up to 90 Mph (145 Kph) for rapid response in critical incidents. Due to its ease of use, low maintenance costs, and innovative designs, the BearCat® is becoming an increasingly popular alternative to up-armored military vehicles around the globe.

The Moroccan Auxiliary Forces order included 5 different BearCat® variants, designed to address a variety of mission profiles. The BearCat® Riot Control model, which is specifically designed for international police forces, was among the variants. This BearCat® model is equipped with a heavy-duty hydraulic plow capable of moving cars, debris, and other barriers. The BearCat Riot Control variant also has protective screens on all windows and lights, fire suppression capabilities and several non-lethal options for hostile riot conditions. The remaining BearCat variants delivered to Morocco included Troop Transport, Communications, Convoy Protection and SWAT.

The Lenco BearCat APC is built on a commercially available chassis, which allows for warranty-covered repairs with maintenance and parts replacement through OEM dealers and truck centers. This greatly reduces lifecycle maintenance costs and training expenses when compared with specialized military vehicles. The armored trucks for the order were manufactured at Lenco’s primary facility in Pittsfield, MA.

U.S.-Morocco naval cooperation targets Al Qaida expansion in N. Africa

Special to worldtribune.com
WASHINGTON — Morocco and the United States have been reviewing joint naval operations in the Mediterranean Sea.
The administration of President Barack Obama has been drafting plans for enhanced naval cooperation with Morocco over the next year.

Officials said the cooperation could include joint exercises, coordinated maritime security patrols and training.
“Morocco’s leadership is critical to our mutual interests of greater stability in the region,” U.S. Navy Secretary Ray Mabus said.

On Aug. 12, Mabus concluded a visit to Rabat to determine options for enhanced naval cooperation. Officials said Mabus focused on Morocco’s role in regional efforts to stop Al Qaida from expanding in North Africa.
“We commend Morocco for their participation in international peace-keeping and the key role they play in the training and assistance of our African partners,” Mabus said.

Morocco was Mabus’ first stop in his North African and Sahel tour. Officials said Washington regarded Morocco as a key partner in maritime and other security operations in both the Mediterranean and the Atlantic Ocean.
In May 2013, Morocco canceled a major U.S. military exercise in protest of Washington’s support for a United Nations resolution on the disputed Western Sahara. Officials said the resolution in the Security Council was
withdrawn and military cooperation resumed.

“As one of our oldest partners, we appreciate the rich military cooperation between our two countries,” Mabus said. “We share many of the same concerns, and my hope is that visits such as mine will continue to advance our future engagements.”

Abidjan - Members of the 17th Moroccan contingent (Moroccan Battalion-MORBATT) operating west of Côte d'Ivoire as part of the United Nations Operation in Côte d'Ivoire (UNOCI) secured the return of Ivorian refugees in Liberia, sources from UN mission in Abidjan said on Monday.

In a statement, the UNOCI said that 486 Ivorian nationals who took refuge in Liberia were repatriated last Thursday by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

The convoy including 22 trucks and two ambulances was secured by the Moroccan blue helmets at the Ivorian-Liberian border post "Pékan Barrage" until the transit center of Toulepleu, a village at the country's far west, the source said.

Active within the UNOCI since 2004, the successive Moroccan contingents are renown at the UN body for their peacekeeping professionalism and duty-bound attitude to serve the host country's national reconciliation.
