Jebel Sahara 2012: Gib-Morocco military exercise

Exercise Jebel Sahara 2012 has now been running for the last three weeks, and has proven to really test and demonstrate how the Royal Gibraltar Regiment reacts in an expeditionary exercise overseas. It has been 12 years since the RG first went to train in Marrakesh and it is still considered an important joint-exercise platform for the regiment and the Moroccan Armed Forces.

“The realistic condition that the terrain offers sets the tempo for operations in a contemporary environment, making the exercise invaluable. The RG troops have been very busy,” comments Maj Juri Williamson, Officer Commanding Exercise Jebel Sahara.

“It has really tested all departments within the RG, from the logistical support to the training staff who have planned and executed the exercise phases.”

Unlike other years, the RG have had to set up a fully functioning operational camp in Sidi Bou Othmane training area, which is 15Km Northeast of Marrakesh.

“Training has been hard but fantastic” mentions Capt John Pitto, Sahara Company second-in-command.

“Conditions have been tough to date but the troops continue to excel in their training”.

The RG will be returning back to Gibraltar towards the end of the month.

Fort Drum surplus ends up in Hollywood, Morocco and state governments

FORT DRUM — Soldiers maneuver their Humvees over the sands of Iraq and up the mountains of Afghanistan, jamming the brakes to avoid landmines and then flooring the gas pedals to fly through insurgent gunfire.

If a vehicle somehow survives the daily pounding of a war zone, it is likely to end up here at an out-of-the-way maintenance lot, waiting for its second life to begin.

On this day, Robert C. DeLong walks past eight, nine, 10 Humvees before stopping at one in the middle of a long row. He steps into the Humvee and starts its engine. It turns over easily and revs loudly, signaling it’s ready for the next mission. The vehicle and 99 other Humvees and cargo trucks have been “frozen” for foreign military sale to Morocco.

“We’ll supply vehicles to other countries, friendly nations. Morocco and Israel are two of our biggest ones,” said Mr. DeLong, a spokesman for Fort Drum’s Disposal Service.

“Our job is to handle excess,” said Kenneth R. MacNevin, chief of public affairs for the Defense Logistics Agency, which handles surplus equipment no longer needed by active units.

Military cooperation between Morocco and Spain

Citaat:
Official visit by Minister for Defence to Morocco

The Spanish minister and the Moroccan authorities will discuss matters of mutual interest and exchange points of view on the areas in Africa experiencing a period of instability. In response to the interest expressed by Morocco, Minister Morenés will offer cooperation from the Spanish Military Emergency Unit (Spanish acronym: UME) to the Moroccan Auxiliary Forces (FAUX) in order to modernise the emergency management system in Morocco and the training of FAUX personnel in Spain.

Minister Morenés will offer cooperation from the Comptroller General's Office (Spanish acronym: IGAE) to the Moroccan National Defence Administration to modernise its financial management and auditing processes.

The two ministers will coordinate their positions on various development-related matters regarding the '5 5 Defence Initiative', of which both parties form part and of which Morocco currently holds the presidency. These matters will include the mechanisms for the joint organisation of the 'Seaborder' maritime security exercises and the extraction of mutual shared benefits from any 'lessons learned'.

Minister Morenés will place a wreath of flowers on the Mausoleum of Mohammed V and will attend lunch at the Circle of Officials with the Moroccan authorities he has met. This lunch will also be attended, amongother high-ranking military leaders, by the Inspector of the Royal Marines (AJEMA) and the Inspector of the Royal Air Force (JEMA).

Bilateral relations on defence issues

Bilateral relations between Spain and Morocco on defence issues are based on the Cooperation Agreement on Matters of Defence between the Kingdom of Spain and the Kingdom of Morocco that was signed on 27 September 1989.

The Bilateral Cooperation Plan with Morocco is extensive, consisting of 25 activities per year on average. In 1989, Morocco was included in the Spanish Programme of Cooperation on Military Training. Since then, more than four hundred Moroccan military personnel have completed their training at schools run by the Spanish armed forces.

The Spanish Army and the Moroccan Royal Army exchange observers in their respective armies from the various specialist fields. The Spanish Navy regularly carries out joint exercises with the Moroccan Royal Marines, the 'MEDATEX' amphibious force and the 'MAES' maritime action forces. The Spanish Air Force cooperates with the Moroccan Royal Air Force on, among other things, search and rescue operations, the exchange of combat and transport squadrons (NAVIMAES), as well as teachers from academies, and on the 'Atlas' biennial aerial defence joint exercise.

Recently, the Spanish and Moroccan Defence Ministers met with their Portuguese colleague and a representative from the Algerian ministry on board the 'Santa María' frigate, boarding at the Rota Navy Base, to witness the 5 5 Initiative 'Seaborder-2012' exercise that was carried out in the Gulf of Cadiz on 27 September.
