Morocco – AIM-9X-2 SIDEWINDER Missiles

May 18, 2011 by Marcel van Leeuwen

On May 17, the Defense Security Cooperation Agency notified Congress of a possible Foreign Military Sale to the Government of Morocco of 20 AIM-9X-2 SIDEWINDER missiles, as well as associated equipment, parts, training and logistical support for an estimated cost of $50 million.

The Government of Morocco has requested a possible sale of 20 AIM-9X-2 SIDEWINDER Missiles, 10 CATM-9X-2 Captive Air Training Missiles All-Up-Round Block II Missiles, 8 CATM-9X-2 Block II Missile Guidance Units, and 8 AIM-9X-2 Block II Tactical Guidance Units, 2 Dummy Air Training Missiles, containers, missile support and test equipment, provisioning, spare and repair parts, personnel training and training equipment, publications and technical data, U.S. Government and contractor technical assistance and other related logistics support. The estimated cost is $50 million.

The proposed sale will contribute to the foreign policy and national security objectives of the United States by supporting Morocco’s legitimate need for its own self-defense. Morocco is one of the most stable and pro-Western of the Arab states, and the U.S. remains committed to a long-term relationship with Morocco.
The Royal Moroccan Air Force is modernizing its fighter aircraft to better support its own air defense needs. The proposed sale of AIM-9X missiles will greatly enhance Morocco’s interoperability with the U.S. and other NATO nations, making it a more valuable partner in an increasingly important area of the world.

The proposed sale of this weapon system will not alter the basic military balance in the region. The prime contractor will be Raytheon Missile Systems Company in Tucson, Arizona. There are no known offset agreements in connection with this potential sale.

Implementation of this proposed sale will require travel of U.S. Government or contractor representatives to Morocco on a temporary basis for program technical support and management oversight.

There will be no adverse impact on U.S. defense readiness as a result of this proposed sale.

This notice of a potential sale is required by law and does not mean the sale has been concluded.

Exercise African Lion 2011 features extensive upgrades, highlights strength of U.S.-Moroccan relationship

5/11/2001 By Cpl. Cullen J. Tiernan , Marine Forces Africa

AGADIR, Morocco — By air and by sea, the U.S. Marines, Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen are landing in Agadir. The service members are here to participate in Exercise African Lion 2011 and train side-by-side with their Moroccan counterparts, the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces.

The U.S. troops arrive here and immediately begin the voyage to Tan-Tan, the small desert town in southern Morocco where the majority of the exercise will take place. The annual arrival of Americans has become a familiar site to the Moroccans as African Lion is in its 8th year. The exercise grows larger ever year. More than two years of planning went into this year’s exercise, and it promises to be the largest, most multifaceted African Lion ever.

“The Moroccans asked us to make the exercise bigger, more complicated and more difficult,” said Marine Maj. Keith Nunn, the lead planner and lead of the exercise coordination cell with Marine Forces Africa. “This really highlights the strong military relationship we have with Morocco. They wanted us to crank it up a little and we are. We have increased the size almost two-fold and have exponentially increased the complexity.”

African Lion 2011 includes many firsts. In order to fulfill the Moroccan request to increase the exercise’s size, Marine Forces Africa requested the Deployable Joint Command and Control Systems, DJC2 CORE Package, and the capabilities of Joint Logistics Over-The-Shore, JLOTS. These new elements have allowed the exercise to include twice as many tanks as last year, M777 howitzer artillery pieces, and the inclusion of JLOTS enablers such as the U.S. Army tugboat Winfield Scott, the USNS Bobo, USNS Pililaau and the HSV-2 Swift, as well as F-15 Eagle fighter jets. In order to ensure all the different elements of this year’s enlarged exercise have constant access to communications, the DJC2 was an essential addition.

Is The Moroccan Navy Negotiating to Buy an American Aircraft Carrier?

The Moroccan Navy is One of The Most Powerful and Well-Equipped Navies in Africa, it is Also the United States Main Ally in Northern Africa.

Today, Now Morocco [Blog] has Learned from a Source that We Can't Reveal, that the Moroccan Navy is Trying to buy a $750 Million Aircraft Carrier from the US Navy. But we Can't Confirm if that is Correct or Not.

Morocco has The Second Largest Navy in the Arab World After Egypt, But it is said that the Latter is Not as Well-Equipped as The Moroccan Navy.

We should Point out that Morocco has Just Bought 4 New Frigates with an Estimated Cost of at Least $200 Million.

This New Deal, If it is True, Will Make The Moroccan Navy The Only Navy in Africa with a Carrier.

4,500th F-16 Produced For International Operator

US defence and aerospace firm Lockheed Martin has ceremoniously unveiled the 4,500th F-16 multirole combat jet to roll off the production line.

It's an unprecedented achievement for a jet fighter in the modern age: no other aircraft of its type having been made in such vast numbers.

First flown in 1974, the F-16 Fighting Falcon stood out from other contemporary fast jet designs. Smaller and more agile, it established a template for many other combat aircraft since created and the first order for it was placed in 1975.

Since then, it's been manufactured in collaboration with five nations and operated by no less than 26 countries.

4,500th F-16 for Morocco

One of these 26 nations is Morocco and the 4,500th F-16 built is destined to serve with the Royal Moroccan Air Force.

Capability and versatility are key to the Fighting Falcon's ongoing success. Continually upgraded as new technologies have emerged and been incorporated, it's nonetheless maintained the same basic shape over the past 38 years.

Mach-2 capable, it can fly at more than 60,000 feet and climb at 50,000 feet per minute. Its F110-GE-100 engine produces almost 29,000 pounds of static thrust when afterburner's engaged and this gives the F-16 a close to 1:1 power-to-weight ratio. And a huge range of weapons can be fitted to its wings, including AGM-65 Maverick Air-to-Ground Missiles, AGM-84 Harpoon Anti-Ship Missiles and GBU-10 and GBU-12 Paveway II bombs.

"The F-16 is the world standard for evolutionary fighters today, and it will continue to secure the freedom of the United States and its allies in peace and combat for decades to come", Lockheed Martin Aeronautics' Executive Vice President, Larry Lawson, explained in a 3 April company press release published online. He added: "This milestone demonstrates that Lockheed Martin has the finest aerospace workforce, and it is our privilege to serve air forces worldwide."

International F-16 Operators

The US armed forces still have more F-16s in service than anyone else but the list of international F-16 operators includes countries in five geographic regions.

Among the European F-16 operators are Belgium, Denmark, Norway and the Netherlands while, elsewhere, the F-16 also equips Taiwan, Thailand and Pakistan, to name but three more. The table accompanying this article lists, in full, the present international F-16 operators.

At the end of February 2012, the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) published data that showed Lockheed Martin's 2010 arms sales were greater than anyone else's that year.

4500th F-16 Delivery Ceremony

Tuesday, April 3, 2012, Fort Worth, Texas.

Lockheed Martin celebrated the 4,500th F-16 Fighting Falcon delivery with a ceremony for employees, customers, former executives and elected officials.

The F-16 is recognized as the world’s most successful modern-day fighter. Since the F-16’s first production orders in 1975, it has been produced in partnership with five countries and has been selected as the front-line fighter for 26 nations. The 4500th F-16 is an advanced Block 52 aircraft destined for Morocco.

“The F-16 is the world standard for evolutionary fighters today, and it will continue to secure the freedom of the United States and its allies in peace and combat for decades to come. This milestone demonstrates that Lockheed Martin has the finest aerospace workforce, and it is our privilege to serve air forces worldwide,” said Larry Lawson, executive vice president of Lockheed Martin’s Aeronautics business area.

The F-16 program has been characterized by unprecedented international cooperation among governments, air forces and aerospace industries. The current F-16 backlog includes aircraft production for Turkey, Morocco, Egypt, Oman and Iraq.
