De drie vrouwen hebben geen inkomen en besluiten daarom het meisje als jongen te vermommen om haar te laten werken, Maar ze wordt al gauw opgepakt en naar een religieuze school gestuurd. Ze moet zich daar zien te redden zonder dat iemand ontdekt dat ze een meisje is.

De film gaat over een 12-jarig meisje dat in afganistan als jongetje (onder de naam Osama) een vrijer leven tegemoet wil gaan, ten tijde van het Taliban-regime. Bin laden behoort niet tot de personages. Scottie reageerde dus weer vanuit zijn reflexen ipv de casus. Jammer. Ik dacht dat Scottie inmiddels wel beter wist. :rolleyes:

Foreign film illustrates Afghan plight http://actionadventure.about.com/library/graphics/osama1.jpg Siddiq Barmak, director of the Afghanistani film Osama Photo provided by United Artists Osama is not a documentary about the terrorist, but it is a film about Afghanistan and the Taliban. The first film to be made in Afghanistan after the collapse of the Taliban tells the story of a young girl who must disguise herself as a boy named Osama to work and buy food for her family. The film was shot in the ruins of the city, and acted by people the director found in the street. Director Siddiq Barmak was a documentary filmmaker in Afghanistan, but all his films were destroyed in the attacks. He’s been on a world tour since making Osama, winning awards at film festivals from Cannes to London to Bratislava. He had just won the Golden Globe when he did his American press tour. Speaking broken English, he misunderstood a few questions, but got to the heart of the question shortly. How difficult was it to find a story to illustrate the problems you wanted to address? I think there is maybe one link between all these difficulties. Afghan people with their own wishes, with their own ideals. On the other side, terror, horror and desperation. There was a link of life between these people. There were a lot of similarities between their emotions and I think that’s why when I put different stories, it looked like one person was crossing all these doors and all of these buildings. But in my opinion, it was a very interesting journey that a little girl crossed all these dark angles of our life and showed how difficult it was. The story was very deep. How difficult was it to find the right actors? Especially the little girl, it was really difficult to find, because I searched for this main character around 3000 girls in different places in schools and orphanages and streets. We were walking on the streets and looking for different faces, but I found Marina [Golbahari] suddenly on the streets, the corner of streets. She was unfortunately begging at the time. I saw that her face was amazing and I asked her, “Do you want to play a role in my film?” She was surprised by this word. She asked me, “What is the meaning of film?” And I discovered she never saw a film and never had a TV set in her house. It was so, so painful for me. And other people, I found grandmother and mother in refugee camps. I found this little boy who made the smoke standing on the street when he was walking to capture dogs and sell these dogs. It was very interesting, and I asked him, given an offer to play a role in my film, he says, “I’m ready to play the role in your film but with one condition. You have to buy all my dogs.” And I told him, “It’s impossible to buy all dogs, but I can say okay for one.” I used this dog in the film. How have audiences reacted to the title Osama? The first test screening, the audience was thinking that it’s a documentary about Osama bin Laden. But anyway it was attractive for them and they wanted to see what’s behind this, what’s the film about? And I think even in Cannes, everybody was asking me, “Is it a documentary?” But my answer is, “Yes, it’s the reality.” After they found out it was a story about a girl, did they embrace the film? Yeah, they were shocked by the film. They found a link between this name and this story. I really wanted to tell about all the horrible things which happened in Afghanistan. Tell the situation. And it’s all because of Osama bin Laden. In my film, nobody has their own personal name because they lost their identity. In my opinion, Osama bin Laden was behind all of this losing. In one scene, the boy making smoke wanted to protect the little girl from the noisy boys on the street because they’re asking if he is a boy, so what is his name? He says his name is Osama because he thought that name should create a scare and fear inside of these little boys. I keep this idea to select the title from this scene. Would you continue making films in Afghanistan? You’re killing me. What can I do without cinema? I’m like a man who is thirsty and has to drink water. So for me, I’m not alive without film. But would you tell more Afghanistan stories or go to other parts of the world? We have a lot of good stories and I think Afghanistan is a good place for filmmaking. Why? Because it’s an unknown place for different people, even unknown feeling sometimes for our people. Cinema is a magic thing. The big screen can bring them another imagination and they should touch closer their own pain, their own street, their own face. Who were your favorite films and filmmakers? Oh, I love a lot of films. I think there are enough great people with great ideas and it’s great to see the films. How did you see films? In movie theaters. Of course we had very limited movie theaters in Afghanistan. Now even there are eight movie theaters still working. Before that we had 25 movie theaters in Kabul. A lot of Indian movies were shown there, American films, European, Russian, Iranian films. And also TV. Now in Kabul, the people are able to watch different cable channels. There’s a cable system where everybody can see CNN, HBO, Starz, different Indian channels. Are things better now? It’s impossible to compare today’s Afghanistan with two years ago, but there are still a lot of difficulties. I think our people are fighting against poverty. They really want to rebuild this country but they need a lot of help and assistance from the international community. Fortunately, our friends in different countries, they are moving very slowly. They promise us a lot of things for our countries, but they didn’t employ these promises. What was your documentary work about? My latest documentary before that was about war prisoners, Pakistani prisoners who were coming from these fanatic organizations which were very active in Pakistan. They were fighting beside of Taliban and they were arrested by Northern Alliance. It was strange. I really tried to find a way to enter inside of these people and see what they are thinking. And it was very dangerous. I was really afraid from these people. Crazy ideology. It was an ideology of horror and I think it did not belong to Islam. It did not belong to the other religions. It was just new ideology of horror. They wanted to accuse some concepts of these religions.
