In Kicks krijgt de jonge supermarktmedewerker en rapper Redouan midden in de nacht inspiratie. Hij belt een vriend met het plan om direct van deze flow gebruik te maken en te gaan rappen. Het besluit om zijn nachtelijk bed te verlaten heeft grote gevolgen, wanneer hij even later dodelijk wordt getroffen door een politiekogel. Agent Frank die het schot lost houdt het op noodweer: het was nooit zijn bedoeling hem te doden. Een aantal Marokkaanse Nederlanders ziet het als een duidelijk geval van racisme, terwijl de meeste autochtone Nederlanders geneigd zijn Frank te geloven. Op de scheidslijn van zwart en wit staan twee jonge Marokkaanse Nederlanders: Redouans broer Said (Mimoun Oaissa), een met een Nederlands meisje (Chantal Janzen) samenwonend en bij blank en zwart geliefde kickbokser en Aaliyah (Maryam Hassouni), politie-agente in opleiding en getuige van de schietpartij. Ze worden verscheurd door de dilemma’s waarmee ze geconfronteerd worden. Beiden dreigen speelbal te worden van de hoog oplaaiende emoties van zowel de Marokkaanse als autochtone Nederlanders.
