Shi’ites Demand Trial And Power; Sunnis Say Resistance Will Continue Dec 14, 2003 Source: The Pennisula, Agencies Most Iraqis rejoiced over Saddam Hussein’s capture yesterday, with Shi’ites demanding trial for the man they saw as their oppressor, but Sunnis said resistance to the US occupation would continue. “He oppressed us. He lacked a minimum of modesty and decency. We wait to see him on trial,” said Abas Hamid, owner of a fruit stall in front of the Kazimain mosque in Baghdad, one of the holiest sites of Shi’ite Islam. The mood was one of celebration in the capital’s bustling Shi’ite district. Residents celebrated Saddam’s capture with bursts of deafening gunfire, but street vendors went on with their business. “Saddam’s rhetoric of resistance had no popularity among us Shi’ites. A resistance will develop if the Americans do not hand us power,” Hamid said, referring to calls made by the former Iraqi leader to resist the US occupation. Shi’ites suffered decades of oppression under Saddam, a Sunni Muslim from central Iraq. The Shi’ites rebelled against Saddam in 1991, but were defeated when western forces allowed Saddam to crush the rebellion. US forces captured Saddam near his home town of Tikrit late on Saturday. A US military video showed Saddam dishevelled and bearded, undergoing a medical examination after eight months on the run. Hamid Ali, a baker making fresh Iraqi samoun bread, was in a hurry to go home to see the pictures proving Saddam’s capture. “Most of my family are either dead or were forced into the army because of Saddam. Every Iraqi should have the right to reclaim justice from him,” he said. “Whatever they do with Saddam it will not be enough,” said Ala Abed, a policeman living in Sadr city, a Shi’ite slum in Baghdad. “He was particularly brutal to us and to our clerics.” In contrast, the mood was sombre across the Tigris river in the Sunni district of Azamieh, where Saddam is believed to have made his last public appearance in front of the main Abu Hanifah mosque. Business has been slow in Azamieh since the fall of Baghdad. The district’s telephone exchange, destroyed during the US bombing, was still in ruins. “The Americans are mistaken if they think Saddam’s capture will demoralise the resistance. The resistance is nationalist and religious in nature. Saddam barely influenced it,” said Numan Adel Karim, a custodian of the mosque. Men who were killed fighting US forces after the invasion are buried in the Sunni mosque’s graveyard. “The Americans have the misfortune of dealing with the most vicious people in the world. There is a new resistance developing independent of Saddam,” said Abdelatif Juma. On Sadoun street, near a square where Iraqis were celebrating, drivers queued in front of a petrol station for hours waiting their turn to fill up as fuel shortages continued to grip Iraq.

Saddam daughter pleads for father Raghad says she is proud of her father, describing him as a lion Saddam Hussein's eldest daughter Raghad has called for an international trial for her father. Raghad Saddam Hussein told Al-Arabiya TV he should not be tried by the Iraqi Governing Council "which was put in place by occupiers". Speaking from Jordan, Raghad said she could not bear to see the pictures of her father put out by the US administration in Iraq. She said her father must have been drugged before his capture. "Everyone who knew him closely knows that he who was shown on television screens was a drugged Saddam Hussein," she told the TV. "But a lion is still a lion, even when it is shackled," she added, saying how proud she was of her father. She said that she and her sisters Rana and Hala would appoint a lawyer to defend the former president. Press speculate Several Jordanian newspapers also suggest that Saddam Hussein may have been drugged. It is clear that the man was taken by surprise and that he was drugged during his capture Jordan's Al-Dustur "Captured President Saddam surrendered of his own free will or was he drugged?" reads the front-page headline in the weekly Al-Sabeel. Another weekly, Al-Hilal, also questions "the ease" with which Saddam was arrested. "This leads many to wonder about the possibility that the American forces used some sedative gas" in the mission, the paper said. A commentator writing in the Al-Dustur newspaper has no doubt. "It is clear that the man was taken by surprise and that he was drugged during his capture, first with a certain gas and then he was administered a type of drug that disoriented him." There has been no word from the US on the allegations that drugs were used on Saddam Hussein. The former Iraqi leader was "disoriented" and "bewildered" when US soldiers helped him out of his hiding hole near Tikrit late on Saturday, US officials said at the time. He put up no resistance although armed with a pistol.

Interrogation may last for months Gary Younge in New York Tuesday December 16, 2003 The Guardian American intelligence officials believe it could be months before Saddam Hussein begins to fully cooperate, after his first days in detention produced little information. While military commanders described the former Iraqi leader as being talkative on Sunday, those interrogating him say that after giving up without a fight he has been defiant and unrepentant. "He's not been very cooperative," one official told Time magazine. He said the transcript of Saddam's interrogation, carried out by CIA and military officials, was full of "Saddam rhetoric-type stuff". When asked, "How are you?", Saddam reportedly responded: "I am sad because my people are in bondage." When offered a glass of water, he replied: "If I drink water I will have to go to the bathroom and how can I use the bathroom when my people are in bondage?" When asked whether Iraq had weapons of mass destruction he said: "No, of course not, the US dreamed them up itself to have a reason to go to war with us." Asked why he did not then let United Nations inspectors examine his facilities, he said: "We didn't want them to go into the presidential areas and intrude on our privacy." Basing their judgment on interrogation of other senior al-Qaida members, intelligence officials say it will be months before Saddam talks. So far US authorities have been surprised by the extent to which Saddam is incapable of giving any coherent information. They say he appears inexplicably disoriented and his handlers are trying to fathom whether he is frightened or mentally ill. Either way, they hope that the interrogation will soon clarify what role, if any, Saddam may have had in directing the current insurgency. One official told Time: "We can now determine if he is the mastermind of everything or not. Have we actually cut the head of the snake or is he just an idiot hiding in a hole?" But Saddam's sister, Nawal Ibrahim al-Hasan, told London-based newspaper al-Quds al-Arabi from an unidentified Arabic capital: "He must have been subjected to drugs or nerve gas to paralyse him, for he is not one to surrender in this humiliating manner."
