Islamic World Gathers in Istanbul to Help By Suleyman Kurt, Ankara Tuesday, August 01, 2006 zaman.com http://www.zaman.com/2006/08/01/ihsanoglu_b.jpg Humanitarian aid organizations from the Muslim world are meeting in Istanbul in an effort to develop a strategy on how to deliver much needed humanitarian aid to Lebanon and Palestine. Organization of the Islamic Conference (IOC) General Secretary Dr. Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu will present the opening speech in the meeting that will focus on developing a strategy to deliver and distribute humanitarian aid including food, clothing and medicine to the victims of the Israeli aggression. The outcome of the meeting will be handled by the leaders of IOC countries at the extraordinary meeting to be held in Malaysia on 3 August. Humanitarian aid and charity organizations from IOC member countries, including Jordan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Libya, Lebanon and Brunei, as well as British-based Doctors Worldwide, will attend the meeting hosted by Turkish charity, The Lighthouse Association (Deniz Feneri Dernegi). Lighthouse Association General Secretary Ibrahim Altan noted that urgent needs are evident and that during the meeting, they will discuss how the aid will be delivered to the two countries. Altan noted that humanitarian aid organizations already active in Palestine and Lebanon will be responsible for organizing the distribution of aid. “The IOC attaches great importance on the non-governmental organizations providing generous donations. The IOC Humanitarian Aid Fund organized this meeting to ensure that much needed aid is collected and distributed to civilians suffering in war-torn Lebanon and Palestine,” said Mr. Altan.
